Hi, I'm considering exporting used cars as there is a market for a lot of the used cars available. Just wondering if anyone else has done this before and if it was worth it or a big hassle. Are there export fees/taxes or other obstacles I should be aware of?

I tried reading the HMRC website regarding export and import but it just appears to be jargon!

Thanks

Then you're wasting your time looking at the UK HMRC stuff! Nobody gives a toss what you take out of the country.

The question is, what do you need to do/pay to get cars INTO the destination countries.

How are you going to get the cars there? Drive them? No, you're going to ship them. So ask the shipping company who are likely to know all the answers. The find someone in those countries who knows about registering imported cars.

Don't think there is enough margin differential to make it worthwhile. No export duties from the UK for used vehicles, but imports to SA are subject to tax and duty, based on the value of the consignment.

The tax, duty, and shipping will add up to a surprising amount, and not to put too fine a point on it the Rand is volatile at present (from 14:GBP to over 16.5:GBP in the last five months), and locals aren't flush with cash.

Plus if you haven't got lots of SA experience, be careful - it's a very, very odd place.

No idea about Pakistan, but can't see that working out well.

Shipping company do dock to dock, they won't advise on customs. OP, you'll need to contact a Customs Broker in the destination country - they'll be the people that receive your cars/container, handle its clearance through customs, and then release/delivery to the destination.

They will be able to advise what customs charges, tax etc you'll likely have to pay.

Then you'll need to talk to the licencing agency in the destination country, and find out the cost of re-registering them.

Then the cost of selling them on to end users - who will be selling them, and again is there any local tax liability on the sale of used imported vehicles.

Lots of homework to do.

Hi guys thanks for the responses. I was just checking to see where the fees would be. I suppose its the shipping company and local taxes. It's just I was on holiday in S.A and Pakistan and I was amazed at how expensive cars were, priced in USD. 1998/2000 reg UK registered cars too.

Thanks once again!

You can't import cars over a certain age into Pakistan.

OK!
It's clear the OP won't have a clue where to find said official.

If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.

It isn't.
