RX8 prices are low enough that it sounds (to me, at least) sensible to buy one at their currently depressed prices whilst they're still relatively new cars, and set aside a fund for a modified/improved engine rebuild later on & there are a good few companies who seem to offer such a service.

Has anyone done similar with a 996 or Boxster? There must be some specialists out there ready to pounce on IMS failures and cracked cylinder walls, or is the specialness/bork cost ratio of a flat six rebuild too low to make it worth the owners while?

Cost me £2.5k at an indy when one of the cylinder heads cracked on my Boxster S, and that was with a second hand replacement head. With a new one it would have been closer to £4k.

Eight grand should do it.

Whilst researching the possible purchase of a 996, I figured on 50-60% based on a purchase price ~10k for a car that has no evidence of work carried out for IMS or bore work etc.

After some consideration, I came to the conclusion that this was a largely asinine endeavour so binned the idea of getting into one as cars that have the work done appear to rarely come up for sale.
