I do a fair amount of miles commuting (100 mile round trip), currently accomplished in my honda civic, sometimes I take my motorcycle and the other day I had the pleasure of using my wifes auto bmw 1 series diesel (cough on my smoke tailgaters)

But I've never found any car (we also had a mk IV golf 1.6) comfortable for more than an hour sitting in it (bike is about the same, but I go through town and do have the chance to stretch out at traffic lights). So I was wondering, is any car comfy? Is it all just a sort of approximation for the average person of whom no-body really is?

I've just recently bought a Volvo S60 D5 SE as a motorway barge. It is without doubt the most comfortable car I've ever driven.

Jag S-type - waft-tastic. Mine was on 17" wheels. I imagine the ride would have been even better on 16"s...

I'd say the Vovlo V70 I borrowed was fantastic for comfort. That and the previous generation E Class.

Took delivery of a 63 plate E220 CDi Estate last year. I drove it to Portugal and back over Christmas, it was supremely comfortable.

I'd say the C6 has the best ride of anything I've been in; the best seats were in a big Volvo of some kind, can't remember the model; the best driving position would be any one of several front-engined sports cars from the 60s.

Best compromise of all that lot? Probably a previous generation S-class (although that was as a passenger not a driver).

I bought an old Vauxhall Carlton as a £500 shed for some cheap motoring and it was by far the most comfortable car i've ever been in and that includes my Dad's old Silver Shadow.

2005 Volvo V70 - everything lined up where it should be, and great seats.

Hmmm, possibly a BMW E34 535i on 15inch wheels. Epic ride quality.

On a long trip though the seats in my E38 728i were better and was also good. Overall though my E65 745i is the best bet, more quiet and better seats than the E34 yet soft enough.

Not the most comfortable I've been in though but I've done 450 miles in it and felt absolutely fine.

Yep, one of the reasons I bought the V70 was those seats!!

Out of all the cars I have owned my E39 is the most comfortable, just eats up the miles and you hardly notice it

Since owning it I have twice done visits to Scotland in it, opting to drive rather than take the train and after 7 hours am not achy at all

Best for me so far has been either the S Type or a Mk3 Mondeo, this is out of a Vectra B, Passat 1.9 TDi, e46 325, E60 520, Focus CMAX and an X Type

Passat was the worst, did a drive back to Notts from exeter and couldnt move for a day afterwards, it was basic cloth trim, S not SE and it hurt. I exected more from the E46, the sports seats were quite thin and you could feel the card behind the seat after a while. The E60 had the most options for seating arrangement, including that bit that comes out from the fron of the seat to support your thighs
