I currently drive a 1986 Mercedes 500 SEC about 6000 miles a year. I live in London, and use the car for pleasure and the odd blast down to the West Country.

The old Merc is beautiful and I love her. My future exwife wont drive it, and we need something we can both drive... but we're encountering some serious issues.

1) She wants a Mitsuoka Viewt (retro, cute and automatic) - I wouldn't be seen dead in it

2) It needs to be able to accommodate kids - the pitter patter of tiny feet is inevitable soon
3) It needs to be relatively new, because I'm looking for something quick, reliable and preferably covered by warranty

My choice is a 2-3yr old 730d or 750i (the saving on the original purchase price is a big turn on for me - includes great spec and BMW warranty)

Question is, for £20k, what car would you choose for a stylish, alternative, family car that can still make you smile when you press the loud pedal?

Thanks

Sam

I am struggling to think of two more diametrically opposed cars than that which you drive and that which your wife wants.

If you are having kids an estate is a good idea.

So some kind of fast estate...

£20k? Surely you can keep your Merc Smoker and get something suitable as well...

Anything with a BMW badge. That seems to be the default choice - except maybe the 1 series as that seems to have an ounce of character.

That one I posted has warranty - and is under 20K.

The percieved wisdom is never have one without a warranty however..

Shirley that is overpriced already, and likely to plummet to sub £5k in a matter of days ;-)

I wish I had the balls to buy a QP. Just the best ~£20k barge available...ruinous however (and that's coming from an ex-TVR owner)

OOoooo...that Viewt object is one of the most horrible things I've seen in a long time whereas your 500SEC is a damned fine car. There's something about a pillarless coupe.

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure you're compatible...

Other than the 730 which looks like a good bet an S4 Quattro might do, there are even some RS4s around £20k that look reasonable.

I've always admired the utter anonymity of the VW Phaeton although it would have to be a diesel for the money you suggest.

Anything...anything would be better than the Viewt...

Keep the merc, it's awesome. Why won't she drive it?

It's threads like this that make me happy my wife doesn't drive. So she doesn't get a say in car related stuff.

I note you have an A3.

Whilst I won't be retracting my previous statement, I will be the first to admit that wild generalisations are rarely accurate nor appreciated by those they refer to. spin
