Evening all, hope you're well.

So later on this year my Dad will be getting the new VW Golf R, the specs are rather outrageous. With 'DSG' it'll get to 60 in 4.9 seconds with the help of 4 wheel drive. If you're using manual you'll be looking at 60 in about 5 and a half but what we were thinking is; semi auto in a hot hatch? Isn't a manual gearbox part of the hot-hatch-fun, so to speak?

Anyway if this were you, would you get the quicker option, or the 'old school' manual?

DSG is great and a lot of fun still. I used to have one.

Just a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer the extra interaction of the manual, some the extra performance and drama of the automatic.

If it were me, with a fondness for autos, I'd get the DSG even if it were slower than the manual.

However, if both manual & auto are available, get the one you prefer and sod what anyone else thinks.

I think we'd all choose DSG but he's more for manual because he believes the GTI's are known for the early 80's manuals. Matter of opinion I guess.

I certainly wouldn't!

There's no right or wrong; he should get what he wants. Ultimately the outright performance is largely irrelevant unless he's planning to race the thing, anyway.

New RS Clio is flappy paddle only isn't it? Yet the Megane has a manual option.

My boss used to have the golf gti anniversary edition with dsg. He told me that the dsg was his only regret about getting the car. It's personal preference but I'd not want a 'fun' car without a manual box.

He will get what he wants and ultimately I'll have little affect on his decision. Although, you should know he's been rocking the TDI badge with honour for several years, meaning he practically believes he's in a race every-time he's on a road, so half a second quicker is really driving his thought process wink

The megane is older than the clio, but when the next gen comes i doubt you will get the choice of a manual.

Yeah. Isn't it obvious why?

We're thinking the same right now. Is it just that feeling of a nob in your hand or is that just me?

Tough one this. My last car was a DSG and the current one is a manual GTI. To be honest, I don't think there is much to choose between the 2. I like the manual on a spirited drive, but would have preferred the DSG when crawling around London today.

I guess it all comes down to what type of driving you do....

I love a good manual and three pedals personally. However, if said hot hatch was a daily driver the auto gains some points and the dsg with flappy paddles can be a lot of fun in its own right.

Last time I extensively drove a flappy paddle car then jumped back into my wife's manual focus I went to pop it down a gear before entering a corner and flashed the headlights!
