Here is the brief
1. Circa15k miles a year
2. Total car ownership cost needs to be under £615pcm
3. Reliable
4. fast
5. Some form of practicality
6. Desirable.

A 20mpg car costs £400pcm on fuel
A 50mpg diesel costs £160pcm

The reason for the £615pcm is this is the value I ran my 330d for 3 years total car ownership cost and so far this is very similar cost to running an RS6 C5 (though nothing has broken yet nor any servicing/consumables).

Looking at the 135i BMW cheap lease deal car and fuel is £560pcm and I'd guess ins £40p taking it up to £600pcm all in.

Its an interesting challenge/quandary

How fast and how practical must it be? Are we talking 300bhp estate category?
For £600/month I imagine that 80% of the cars are available to you.

Over 300bhp or under 6 ideally under 5 seconds to 60. Practicality well I'm 6'2" and needs to fit the golf clubs in the boot and shopping. Am thinking the wife to get an estate instead

Possibly too open I'd say.

Random suggestion: Merc S55

What you'll save on depreciation you'll spend on fuel.

Not sure but its a possibility am considering a switch so that the wife get the bigger car and me less so (change of circumstance - another little one on the way).

Well congratulations.

Best thing I ever did was get the wife into a kid friendly MPV. Shes happy with the practicality and I'm happy with the running costs.

But most importantly it means there are now zero limitations on what I can run as a daily - hoorah! smile

Thanks - have been viewing S Max/XC90's etc for the wife and also Passat estates trying to gauge what is most suitable but it does mean that the car I use can now be really for me most of the time but still don't want silly total car ownership costs but need fast.
