I've been thinking over the last few days, thanks to my other half's car being a PITA, that I'm actually being spoiled by my current car. So much so that I just cant seem to bring myself to swap it for something else.
Having recently graduated and started my career my income is in a much better shape than whilst working through uni. Now seems a decent time to trade in my 2008 Ibiza for one of two options.
Option 1; Something nice and professional looking. Maybe some form of saloon or just something that can munch up the miles. (Insurance will still be an issue as I've not long turned 21)
Option 2; Get something bat crap crazy as I should have access to the funds to repair most things and what with a company car on the slightly distant horizon it wont have to be in daily use for too long.

Now I'm not confessing a humble 1.4 formula sport to be the dogs danglies or anything but to me its been perfect. I must admit I have been pretty decent with my maintenance and always gone for the decent options when it comes to tyres and such but the things never put a foot wrong. Its also taken everything I can throw at it over the last couple of years of ownership. I've chucked over 25k miles on it with commuting to Lincoln from Birmingham for a summer and various trips to visit family in Ipswich. Not to mention my penchant for thrashing the living daylights out of it in the Lincolnshire countryside and various road trips for job interviews.
Now I just cant seem to find anything in my price range that takes my fancies enough for me to get rid of what I have now. I must admit I have had my eye on a nice cheap MX-5 to go alongside the Ibiza but I cant get to Portsmouth to fetch it.

So have any of you guys ever been in a position where you car has just been too good to actually part with it?

Yes. But it wasn't a Seat Ibiza.

I have got one as it goes, a 2.0 TDI FR on a 62 plate. If you like your current car so much, why not get one of the incredible lease deals on the new shape...

That would be noticeably quicker than what you've got now, and a huge leap in quality. They are well set up, beans to tax and in a very low insurance group. Plus, they have 2 year / 20k service intervals.

If your mileage would lead to DPF issues on a TDI, the 1.2 TSI is a cracking engine and not that much more expensive.

Little point in leasing if you are looking at a company car on the horizon as 2/3 years lease term a lot could change in an early career.

Do you have a budget in mind?

Quite often you are better the devil you know. Maybe another Seat or something else VAG would be good as you have faith in the brand.

How would a 5dr DSG Golf GTI come out on insurance for you?

I'm in a similar place I guess. Got a Civic Type-R that I've owned since 2004 that I can't quite bear to get rid of, even though I bought a Porsche a couple of years ago (originally to replace it).

It's been supercharged so is pretty rapid, and it's basically given me no grief whatsoever for all the time I've owned it, I've never had to replace the clutch or the brake discs - whereas I had to do this within 3 months of Porsche ownership at a significant cost to qualify for the extended warranty.

Every time I look at replacements in the classifieds I realise I've basically got a spend a good £20k+ to get a car that's at least as fast (I don't think I could go backwards power wise, been spoiled by having fast cars all my driving life really) with the refinement and more modern feel I'm currently missing, and then I look at my Type-R and think "better the devil you know". I'm very much a creature of habit though, and where I'm at in my life at the moment having a car that is dependable is a nice comfort.*

* I've had a problem with it recently but it's been localised to an aftermarket alarm system, so I can't blame Honda or the car for that!

Yes. For my boring drive to work I have a MK5 Golf GT 2.0 TDi. Of course there are better, more exciting cars out there but it does everything I need it to. The MK6 isn't worth changing to and the Mk7 doesn't offer anything more that's obvious.
I do fancy a Passat CC next though...but while the Golf feels solid still there seems little point in changing.

spoiled by a 1.4 seat ibiza
i had one of these as a rental and i've had plenty of cars i'd paid less than a 10th of what it would have costs, that i would have far rather been driving

Because (1) if you're so impressed with your current car, the only way is down, and (2) why have two of the same car? Now at this point I admit I've had both an E46 and an E92 3-series coupe, both with the 2.0d engine.

I'm itching to buy a new car but the current one has this annoying habit of being brilliant and bombproof.

Most annoying. hehe

I think you've missed the point. The point that I was trying to make was that although my boring little ibiza is nothing special whatsoever, it's been 100% reliable whilst handling everything I've thrown at it.
Now my financial position has changed, I still can't seem to bring myself to change.

I'd still love to hear some more of your stories!

I have an E46 320i at the moment…smoooooth straight six, RWD, rifle-bolt manual and great steering. It's great on the motorway, it's great on B-roads and it's easy to drive in town. The only affordable car I can think of to replace it is the 330 (ideally in coupé form).

I could only think of replacing my E39 528i SE with an E39 530i Sport. So that's what I did!

Not really, I get bored easily so I'm always thinking about what I'll get next.
