Tax discs to be abolished after 93 years (includes rant)...

...But inconvenience and hassle to rise.
So Georgie Osbo is messing around with things which don't need to be messed around with.
Now a lot of people will say it's about time, and in some aspects I agree, the current tax disc is nothing but a glorified receipt in your windscreen these days.
What I don't agree with is the tax will be non-transferable. Ie when this backwards new bit of legislation comes in you won't be able to buy or sell a car with tax on it. If you have tax left and you're selling your car you must surrender it and if you're buying a car then you're going to have to tax it. How is that helpful?
Additionally, you can still only claim back whole months, so say if you have 3 months and 2 weeks remaining, you can only claim back the 3 months. Similarly, you will still need to tax a vehicle from the start of the month even if it's half way through the month. Straight away I see where people will still lose out and the government will continue to pocket the difference. So all this moving forward and still zero flexibility in the system, bra-vo.
This is apparently to make it easier for us (?) and to make it even more difficult for the naughty motorists out there to drive illegally, ie you can't tax a car without insurance. That was always the case was it not. Plus, if you're dodgy you'll drive illegally anyway regardless of the laws in place.
They're also trumpeting about taxation going full online, it already is. I've taxed my cars online for a number of years now.
Then we get to the meat of the matter, this will, says Georgie save the beloved Gov an estimated £7m a year, oh good, so I anticipate those savings being passed onto the motorist then. Thinking on though, and I'm just taking a wild guess but I don't think we'll see any benefit. I have lots of ways to save money where the government's concerned...
There's too much interfering where motorists are concerned and while I'm sure someone will tell me it's a trifling thing compared to some hapless bugger who's had a leg removed via a mine in some war-torn hell hole, I can't relate to that.
I can relate to a pettifogging, small minded mean, penny pinching 'government' (such as it is) who seem to delight in bringing in more and more pointless legislation.

If they just scrapped the tax completely it would save even more on admin.
If it's a true emissions tax then work out a system where Joe Average pays no more and those that do use the most fuel pay more tax.
It does seem silly that granny that does 500 miles a year pays possibly more VED tax than somebody doing 30k miles a year.
