The car that Ive been looking at seems to advertise on average around £11,500 (pre negotiation price) used sticker price (60-11 reg with roughly on average 25,000 miles on the clock). I actually book a test drive for one that really caught my attention. However, I was literally a few hours too late and the car had sold. Now, after checking on autotrader there doesn't seem to be any other of these cars with the same age, mileage and price.

What I did find however was a 61 reg with 11,500 miles on the clock. The dealer wants £14,600 for it, is this car with less than half the mileage of the ones Ive been interested in and is also half a year newer. Is £3000+ extra too steep?

I'd offer whatever it is you want to pay. What's the worst that can happen?

If they say no then there will be others. Of tey say we then happy days. If they say they'll meet you half way then keep at it and you'll get them down to where you want smile

£3000 extra (on the asking price) seems reasonable to me - if it's really such a hard to find car that there aren't any others around. Especially if it's a main dealer.

Split the difference?

There are loads of the car I am after around but not with this low mileage. Also the cars were stopped be made in 2012. I suppose if I can split the difference it equates to 10% off the total price.

It may talk a lot better though, walk in and offer £13,000 straight notes to take the car off their hands on the day. If they reject all for the deficit of £1,600.00 then it's thier loss. I'd wager on the sales man chasing after you saying he'll 'speak to his boss' after initially saying no whilst you walk out the door.

Dependant on the dealer, cash could well be a negative. When I was selling MINI's a a few months ago, a finance customer would be more likely to get a better deal than a cash customer.
