Afternoon all.

Any suggestions on a cheapish head unit?

A few years ago in a previous car I had one of the Alpine ida(?) series with rear iPod hookup, iPod sat in the glovebox and I could control everything from the HU.

Looking around now there don't seem to be any available anymore that have rear hookup - they all seem to have a pants aux cable or USB in on the front face. If I wanted stupid cables hanging out of my dash everywhere I'd get a cheap tape deck and use one of those cassette with a cable things. I don't want that, I want a proper bit of kit where I can control my iPod and hide it. Why this is so hard I cannot fathom. When these things were in their infancy there were easy solutions from Alpine, Pioneer, Sony, JVC etc etc. Now - nothing.

Oh and it needs to light up green to match the dash lights and preferably not look like a childs idea of a fireworks display if possible. Ideally single DIN but can take double if needs be.

Any ideas? I don't want to spend much more than £100 and i'm not fussed about bluetooth, CD or anything else. This is 2013 not 1993 dammit! :P

If your standard HU has a CD changer input, look for a kit that uses it to emulate the iPod as a CD changer.

Got one in my Honda and it's great. Cost about £80 and gives me iPod control from the factory HU, cheaper than a gawdy aftermarket unit.

Kozy - like the suggestion. Will that give me track names/albums etc though?

I have a LOT of music - I shudder to think how mental i'd go if I had to go to CD #344 in order to get Pearl Jam biggrin

Mine doesn't, but that doesn't mean all of them won't.

On mine, you select the album/playlist on the phone, you can skip the tracks from the head unit and go backwards/forwards through the playlists/albums in order.

It's not as good as a full iPod head unit, for sure, but the cost and OEM looks were more important to me.

Pioneer do some decent ones which are fully ipod compatible. On my last car I had it professionally installed and he routed a cable straight into the glovebox for me. Plenty of options out there I'm sure.

You're probably as well looking for a used Alpine one on ebay. I've had a few of them and the current one is now six years old but still working perfectly well. I actually recently picked up another 9886R for my dad's car which cost a whole £70 and looked in much better condition than my own!

I have an Alpine iPod HU in my Sierra - given that the car has done less than 4000 miles in the 4.5 years snce it was registered, the HU hasn't had a lot of use.

I recently bought a Parrot to replace it (for the bluetooth and colour screen) so I'm open to offers, but haven't actually removed it yet. Still have all the original cables, the box and manual etc.
