Missing seats are not a valid reason to fail MOT.

Not technically true. There are many things in the MOT manual that have to be present if fitted as standard at the factory, e.g. seatbelts (for each seat present and for which a seatbelt was fitted as standard), brake servo.

There is special dispensation for race/rally/competition/special vehicles with regards to some specific items, but the definition of such a vehicle is largely up to the tester's discretion.

my stripped out bmw passed an MOT with very few problems - my mods at the time included:

no rear seats or seatbelts
no carpet
standard front inertia reel seatbelts taken out and replaced with four point harnesses
no sunvisors or any roof trim
very little dashboard
bonnet pins instead of standard bonnet release.

the only things i had a problem with was the airbag light was on since i'd taken out the standard wheel, and at first they couldnt find the hazard switch. once they refitted the standard wheel and i'd pointed out what dangling wire the hazard switch was on the end of, it passed. I think if i can remove the airbag warning light, it would then pass without airbags.

also not sure on this, but a horn may be an mot requirement.

I was under the impression that this was the case and must be present and working. Had an old land rover that had a problem horn and fited an air horn type thing as it was quick and easy. Passed mot no problem with that.

Yep, definitely worth having a friendly chat with the tester. Mine passed no probs with servo removed, floor-mounted pedal box and bias bar, bucket seats, seatbelts replaced with harnesses and the like. The dude was more than happy to call VOSA to clarify any concerns re. the brakes smile

Don't forget that some testers are more savvy with this than others. Perhaps ask around some almost road legal championships or Caterham/Westfield forums for details.

If thats the case, I'm presenting my car without any tyres!

I think the unwritten rule is "If it's fitted, it must work". For things that aren't always on every car, like rear wipers, front fogs etc.
