Honest question which has been ringing around in my mind since the weekend when I looked at a Fiat 500 "695" edition at the Autosport show.

Q. What on earth convinced you spend £33,500 on a Fiat 500?

When these came out, the 500 was one of the ultimate fashion accessory cars for women and camp men, the Ferrari tie-in editions were a top status car. Like a handbag with wheels.

Why on earth would anyone ask something like that... Why does anyone do anything? Perhaps because they can, and they want to...? Back under the bridge, Trollasaurus

ETA: On reflection perhaps my response was a little harsh. Your post just came across in a very obnoxious fashion, to me at least

I can see the point, thats a lot of cash for a warmed over retro shopping car that normally costs about ten grand.

Doubt there are many PH owners, suspect the owners are very wealthy people who just wanted one because they like the 500 and they like an exclusive version even more, and can afford it, its not like they were having to choose between that and the aging 911 Turbo most of us would be frothing about now is it.

Because the people who buy one already had the F430 Scuderia in their garage and needed a car for their trophy wives to go and do their shopping at Gucci in wink

perfectly reasonable question...

Fiats marketing dept obviously thought they would sell, probably to those people to whom money is no object and are prepared to buy a small car to use to pop to the deli / farmers market / colonic irrigation centre in.

At least it's better than that bloody Aston Martin baby swan!!

There is, in fact, a special Gucci version for just that purpose.

I quite like them and looked at buying one, but in the end couldn't get past the sticker price. It is taking the p*ss a little too much.

The 595/695 are a bit pointless, the base car needed some updating to match the rivals, rather than make many differing versions that no one really knows the difference between, ok some have Koni's as standard, but its far less streamlined.

Abarths image (according to the FIAT tyrants) is just to race up cute cars, it isn't, Abarth made some amazing racing cars, with rather impressive wins/championships over the years. The 500 should have been the start to get Abarth back in the minds of car people, then they should have made a small sports car rather than make 1million variations of a car that didn't need it.

It does amaze me that it is possible to spend 3x what my girlfriends 500 cost for a version higher up the range - is there any other car that has such a variation of price within the same model?

I've never actually understood the Abarth versions, the 500 is a great cute little shopping car, the Abarth models seem a lot more masculine, taking away the main attraction of the 500. To be fair the Twinair 500s are really fun to drive anyway.
