Had my Lexis 220d for a year now and its cost £2300 in repairs which got me thinking what to do for the future. I'd never considered buying nearly new but a friend bought a year old insignia for around £11k and I started doing the man maths on depreciation and its starting to look cheaper than the Lexus. To lease, for example a Lexus for 3 years is £9800 so I guess buying would be better. I'm not a fan of these cars but need one for everyday work. The Lexus was purchased as they are meant to be reliable but it seems to have cost a few quid so far!
Anyone else buy nearly new or stick with an older used car?

I run a 51 plate 330Ci. I could afford a £250-300 per month lease on a diesel thing, but despite the last MOT throwing up a £1800 bill (not usually though) it still works out cheaper overall. Plus I get to have a straight 6 NA RWD rather than a 4 pot diesel grey box.

I think I'd always go for an older but more interesting car in future.

Older Lexus' are reliable. Petrol Lexus' are reliable. Never heard the same for their Diesel engines.

In my experience most of the cars built in the last few years are nowhere near as reliable as cars from say, the early-mid-late 90s.

Probably a lot cheaper to run an IS200 / GS300, even including repair costs. The cars themselves don't cost more than £2300 so you would never need to spend that on repairs!

isnt the is220d known for its bad reliability? (unlike the 250 petrol)

If you are looking for reliability in the future, Id suggest checking out some leasing deals that include maintenance. Downside is it may end up costing you more in the long hall if you lease repeatedly.
