Subaru SVX: Catch It While You Can

The return of the WRX STI has got Keith wanting to save another Subaru from extinction

It's good to see a Subaru WRX STI is coming back to the UK, even it’s no longer officially an Impreza by name. I'd been thinking about Scoobys just last night, when I spotted an SVX. In motion. And in the pouring rain, cracking along at a fair old pace. The owner clearly had confidence in his tyres, his headlamps, and knew this bit of Northamptonshire B-road pretty well.

She's a beaut- ... oh, actually she isn't
She's a beaut- ... oh, actually she isn't
For an insane moment, it led me to have one of those 'I'd have one of those in my garage' moments. And after a good night's sleep, it continues to linger. I've always had a sneaking admiration for Subaru, and its decision to stick with the boxer engine and that symmetrical all-wheel drive system when any other company would have given up years ago. The SVX fits perfectly into that gene pool.

The SVX made quite a splash when launched back in 1991. It was an ItalDesign-styled concept for the road, powered by Subaru's new and quite stunning EG33 flat-six. When new, it was labelled as quirky and interesting by the car magazines, and Autocar was quick to pronounce that it had the beating of the Jaguar XJS 4.0. Strong words.

But with a launch price of £27,995, and in the pre-Impreza era, Subaru wasn't quite ready – in the minds of big coupe buyers – for greatness. Perhaps they were right to dismiss the SVX. Whatever their thinking, it was, and remains, a great long distance cruiser. But a sporting car, it was not. What it lacked was power, and a great manual gearbox. Or a manual 'box or any description...

OK, if not handsome then definitely interesting

A quick scan of the PH classifieds soon reveals that my sighting was indeed a rare one. And more tellingly, the SVX still has yet to find its place in the PH pecking order. It's been a SoTW, and a controversial one at that , and one that it seems quite a few don't quite get. But top-notch examples of original UK cars can fetch anywhere up to £8,000. I'm nowhere near ready for that level of commitment, but equally, I wouldn't kick the right £2,000 example out of my garage.

A few years back, I drove one for a magazine feature, and the memory of the experience remains firmly imprinted in my memory. The amazing styling, the futurist interior, a well-engineered feel, and that amazing howling engine and exhaust note. It's the latter that really does set the SVX apart from its contemporaries, such as the Porsche 968 and Jaguar XJS. But, my word, that four-speed autobox really defines the SVX as a cruiser, not a charger – and that's a shame, as the flat-six is crying out to be properly unleashed. In standard form, its 0-60mph time of 7.5 seconds and 145mph were nothing to write home for the money.

Cars this odd need to be saved from the scrapper!

Would I be able to leave it alone? Probably not. SVXs are well-known for their gearboxes packing up after as little as 60,000 miles in the wrong hands, due to heat build-up and abuse. Replacing it with a five-speeder from the Legacy or Impreza is a reasonably well-trodden path, and one that faced with the prospect of an autobox rebuild, I'd find hard to resist. I'd probably be tempted to release a bit more power, too – the EG33 will certainly take far more than the standard 227hp. Imagine a manual 'box SVX, pushing out 300hp? All of a sudden it looks a lot more tempting.

Had the SVX not been launched as the early-1990s recession was gaining momentum, and Subaru had been able to stick with the concept, it would have been developed into something like that. But right now, we're left with a fascinating might-have-been, and one that's not far from the endangered list. At the last count, there were 70 taxed and 62 SORN'd examples left on UK roads. If you want an SVX, catch one now before they've all disappeared – assuming you can.

saw one recently for shed money, was quite tempted but parts availability put me off. I'd say it could be a rocket though with some other subaru tuning parts.

I remember seeing one in the 90's at a car show and have loved them ever since. It's all about that styling, it does genuinely look like a late 80's/early 90's concept that somehow got signed off for production. I've never heard one at full chat though and have been curious how they sound for years. I hear YouTube beckoning.....

I almost bought one brand new back in 1996 but went for an Impreza Turbo instead. Had the demo one from the Subaru dealership in Derby for a couple of days and was really impressed with the way it covered ground quickly, smoothly and without fuss.

This is spookily timed as I've been running one of these as a daily for the past year and was thinking of trading it when I go to look at a potential replacement this weekend.

I initially bought it as a cheap stop gap last year to replace my BMW 840i. I loved the BM but it was Irish registered and the bill to get it through the Swiss MFK was prohibitive. I live in the Alps and while I enjoyed the numerous moments of fully sideways on snow action in the 8 I wanted to get something 4wd that I could let my wife drive throughout the winter without fearing for her safety.

I actually went to look at a non turbo legacy (all turbo legacy, forester and impreza variations are very expensive here) but it just wasn't me and I happened across the SVX randomly.

It certainly is an interesting design. If the 8 was a shark then this is very much a catfish. I actually really like the rear and rear 3Q of the car but the front is gopping. The windows do add a bit of theatre to things as well.

As per the article the engine is an absolute gem that is completely strangled by the worst gearbox I have ever experienced in car ownership. It really is a turd of a device. It is not quick but when the weather turns foul it really shows it's worth. I have yet to unstick it (on road at least). It is also the most reliable car I've ever owned/run (including a god awful Auris company car I ran for 6 months)

I have done 30,000 miles since May and it has not used a drop of oil, The only time it was in the garage was to weld an exhaust heat shield back in place after I had introduced it to awful Tuscan roads.

Hmmm, I am almost talking myself into keeping it

I know they are for the 90s but they always reminded me of the sort of cars you saw in 'Joe 90' or 'UFO' etc

Well there's always this one....

Maybe a tad pricey but it looks to be in good condition...

Also, the SVX features on Top Gear USA on an episode about 'sales disasters' I believe.

Saw one on the road in Perthshire a couple of weeks ago. It's the first time I ever recall seeing one. Sounded good and wasn't hanging around.

As an impoverished student I used to go to Bentleys of Sheffield (think they are no longer) on my walk in to study, and sit in the Legacy and Impreza turbos they would have in the showroom. They always had a couple of SVX in and I used to really quite fancy one as a long distance tourer, today a bargain one would make a top Le Mans bus.

I had one for a few years. Great cars, but reliability and parts availability spoil things.

Gearboxes fail. All of them.

Lots of parts are not used on any other uk subaru.

Get a manual conversion and maybe worth thinking about.

BTW almost all have a black roof. Only press cars and the last few made have a body coloured roof.

in the mid 90s near me a shopkeeper used to have one and of the rip old age of 12 I used to stare at it in amazement every time we drove past in our Renault 25 TXE.

My drawings of cars around that age strangely all looked like this.

My uncle used to work for International Motors when these came out and turned up in one, may as well have landed a spaceship back in 1991.

think it would be one of those "What the hell have I done" moments if you parted for good money for one though, quite like them, nicely oddball but is the drive special enough to be worth the agro ?

I love these, especially in red or silver. I remember pouring over the details of these in my teens in the Motorshow Car Yearbooks you use to be able to buy in the 1990's.
