Lotus Europa S: Spotted

A lightweight Cayman rival with a four-cylinder turbo? The Europa was the 4C of the 2000s.

Twitter is a wonderful resource for the avid petrolhead. Everyday throws up news of another astonishingly rare model derivative, more first drives than could ever be read and the kind of fabulously nerdy details we all love to know.

Seen one recently? Us neither
Seen one recently? Us neither
So a dutiful hat tip to John McGregor (who goes by the name RacingPuma round these parts and in the Twittersphere) for pointing out something nobody appears to have noticed yet; if it was still being made, the Lotus Europa would be the perfect Alfa 4C rival.

Think about it. Both are very light, use fairly run-of-the-mill turbocharged engines and don't power steering; they were both intended to offer fresh alternatives to the ubiquitous Germans.

The logic behind the Europa seemed fine. A slightly more habitable Elise that could be used everyday without much sacrifice in handling purity. Under a tonne and 200hp but with leather, air-con, a stereo of sorts and airbags. The best of both worlds, surely?

But it never really worked for the Europa. The first contributing factor has to be how it looked, an issue the Alfa certainly isn't afflicted by. The daintiness and originality of the Elise was replaced with a well-proportioned but rather dull and featureless silhouette. There's nothing fundamentally bad about the Euopa's appearance, but that styling spark that makes people crave a sports car was lacking.

Like an Elise, but a bit plusher
Like an Elise, but a bit plusher
However, the Europa's biggest flaw from a customer perspective was that it was too similar to an Elise. Pitched as a TT or Cayman alternative, it proved too raw and compromised as a year-round sports car. From what has been said about the early UK drives in 4C, it sounds like it could be similar.

Time has been kind to the Europa though. The initially frosty reception meant fairly swift depreciation but values seemed to have levelled out now. This early S is still up at £21K after 20,000 miles and seven years of use. As an Elise that could be used on the occasional commute or longer journey, the Europa may well have found its niche.

The advert for this Graphite Grey Europa says it has 225hp (as opposed to the standard 200) so it could have some tweaks from the later and improved Europa SE. That or its Milltek exhaust has a rather optimistic power gain...

The 'but' with the Europa comes, of course, with the Elise. You could sacrifice some comfort for that last bit of dynamic edge, right? And it isn't turbocharged. And you could have this gorgeous Sport 190 for the same money as the Europa with an identical mileage. Decisions decisions...

Hmmmm, these look better than I remember. I've only seen one in the flesh and that was years ago.

Looking for an S2000 replacement....

Fabulous cars and if power to weight is your thing they have very tunable engines.

The only downside is that they're not really that much practical than an elise really but who cares about that.

I agree funny old car the Europa, one thing I can say is that they look loverly in the flesh.. its a very compact little package that works very well overall, you really need other cars around to highlight this.

Same price as an Esprit though... hmmmm

Lots of money for something that because of the huuuuuge width of the sills is not exactly practical to get in and out of. Love the Elise and accept the compromises - but this doesn't seem that much more practical!

Indeed. I looked at one of these but for around £5k cheaper i purchased a similar vintage Z4M with two years warranty from a main dealer.

Admittedly they are different cars but the Z4M's engine is in a differnet league, the car is far more practical, etc.

As stated above if your willing to accept the compromise go with the Elise/Exige if not the Z4M/Cayman and quite a few other cars at this price point offer a better ownership proposition.

I do like these though smile

I always thought the Europa was badly marketed.
If it had been sold as 'The Elise You Can Go To Work In' or 'The Elise Your Wife Will Like' it might have sold better, but the intersection between Cayman buyers and Lotus buyers is small, so selling it as a serious alternative to the Cayman was never going to fly.

Always liked them though, at the time they were launched I had a S2 Exige and always thought I'd progress to the Europa, but instead went racing and had a family, so ended up with family/tow cars and a pure racer in the garage.

As for the Sport 190 as an alternative, been there bought the S1 Sport 190 - K-Series in that level of tune are not for the faint-hearted (or those who need to rely on the car to get them anywhere), most people find it surprising when I say I enjoyed the ownership of the S2 Exige far more than the S1 Elise as it goes against received wisdom, but I could use the car more, running costs were cheaper and life was far less fraught with breakdown/repair bills.

I think the Europa is a step further down that road, the S2 was easier to live with than the S1, the Europa even more so - the woman you marry to the S1's tempestuous but doomed affair.

And that seems to have been it's problem. I wonder if Lotus have considered redoing it with the VVA chassis from the Evora? Would allow for a much more everyday car to separate it from the Elise/Exige.

That does look good. Can't believe how firm the price is. 33% depreciation over 8 years is pretty good going.

At twice the price.

Still, £20k seems OTT for this to me.

I actually think these are really good looking cars. The S1 Elise was a beautiful thing but the S2 looked a bit overstyled and frankly, quite goofy. This has a much cleaner, more refined design. It's also not ubiquitous like an Elise.

Great buy with fantastic looks but you can't get the roof off.

Oh and whatever you do, don't smash a headlight.

These modern day Europas were great cars ........ but idiotically priced.

Essentially IIRC a hard-top Elise for £35,000 with the VX220 engine when you could buy a nice new Elise for £25,000.

As a historical curiosity from Lotus it, like the M250 concept, shows what Evora should have been. i.e. not some poorly styled and packaged 2+2.

Erm, not twice the price....unless your maths is very poor. I picked up a 09 Evora last month at £29k from main dealers Bell and Colvill, absolutely loaded to the gills with Sport / Tech / Premium plus Forged wheels, reversing Camera, Alpine Imprint and Lotus Stage 1 exhaust with 31k miles and new PZeros plus a warranty. The difference of the v6 over a Europa is significant and (IMHO) much stronger visual appeal, submlime steering, braking and chassis damping for a £8k premium (and 3 years newer). That said the Europa is stilla very pretty car in the fibreglass and both are much rarer on our roads than my 997.

I reallyyyyy don't get the appeal of Lotus.
I have had a track day in an Elise (only 4 laps mind you) and I can sort of see why people buy them but I think there are better alternatives and all rounders than this.

Can't be the only one can I?...

These seem to have become better looking with age and as a weekend car for driving to the decent B roads and battering them before driving home it has to up there. I reckon that the initial outcry over Porsche's electronic steering was a missed opportunity for Lotus. Anyone know the situation at Lotus at the moment? I did a quick google and I could only really find news about the F1 team.

I just glanced at my calendar and noticed that the 12c is a remarkably similar shape to an Evora. Irrelevant but felt the need to say it anyway.
