....can it turn into a p*ssing contest?

For example say you're doing 70mph and you spot car X in the distance.

You catch up with car X.

Overtake car X.

Car X decides to overtake you.

Car X then decides to slow a bit.

You then decide to overtake and drive at a quicker pace for a few miles.

Not long after car X overtakes you again!

WTF?!

Especially obvious how much other drivers vary their speed is when you are using cruise control!

This boils my piss. A bloke did it to me three times a few weeks ago late at night on the M3, then flashed his lights at me as he left the motorway!

The thing that really winds me up is when I'm keeping a nice constant speed, cruise control on, move out to pass, get alongside and the recipient of my overtake speeds up either matching my speed or pulling back ahead. MORONS!

I often have to vary my speed when I get people sitting just off the back quarter for what seems like an eternity (they are doing 0.1mph more than me) when I'm approaching a car in front. When they won't move over I'll accelerate to move away from them to enable me to move lane. Post overtake I'll drop back to the inside and my original speed. It does seem to be the middle lane hoggers that are the problem.

Also when cars enter the motorway I often move out to let them join. They speed up slightly so as I'm now in an outer lane I feel obliged to go past them which means speeding up - I'll then sometimes end up going past cars that have been doing the same speed as me before...

When you overtake and the car inside you speeds up it is usually a subconscious decision give it a few seconds and they slow down, of course there are the 'I will not be overtaken' ones as well

Turn it into a game. How many orbits of the buffoon can you make without altering your speed?

Quite satisfying when they manage to box themselves in behind another car and have to brake because they can't change lanes though.

Is this because they feel you are sitting alongside for too long meaning they are getting blocked in behind slower cars in front?

I sometimes get bored when cruising and intersperse this boredom with the occasional blast up to 100, I'm probably the guy you hate biggrin

Doing just that late at night two years back cost me 3 points and £60 when the "idiot" turned out to be a copper who did me because I was accelerating up to 85 plus to make a safe pass while he sat 3 cars lengths back in lane 2 the whole time.
Felt like arguing the point but then you run the risk of him wanting to take things up a notch so let it go.
Now i slow down and let them pass so I can check they aren't cops.

Don't think so, I try to avoid that as that's another thing that gets on my wick. If you're going to pass, don't take all week. I reckon it's mainly people who just can't drive at a constant speed, or hate being overtaken.

This thread is the reason I drive at 0.9 leptons on motorways if conditions allow because it's rare you get anyone wanting to pass you and you're going fast enough to make swift progress past all the lemmings doing 70-80 ish. I tried the CC at 80 thing and it is the most unfuriating thing ever because no-one else can maintain a constant speed. The only time CC can be used without interruption nowadays is in the middle of the night when you have the road to yourself.

Was possibly just saying thanks for playing. It might not have been an aggressive flash.

Are you sure lemmings is the right word? They sound like they're trying to keep their licence alive whereas you're trying to kill yours. smile

I agree entirely with the thread though. It's up there with the lane hogging and congestion.
What I have found worrying is the numbers on PH (becoming less though) who are unaware of the problem. I do wonder if they're the people who are also unaware that they change their speed when being overtaken.

It does not just happen on motorways, Going to work one morning, came up behind a car doing 40 mph on an NSL A road, but the road was not suitable for a safe overtake, so I just stayed behind it until we reached the next village, where the limit dropped to 30mph. The car in front stayed at 40 mph and disappeared into the distance through the village. After leaving the village the road was good enough to accelerate to 60mph, and I quickly caught up with Mr 40mph (who was still doing 40mph because I was obliged to stay behind him for a while until a safe overtake section of road presented itself) I went by him, and carried on until the next built up area which was a small town, came up, at which point I slowed to the lowering limits of 50 then 40, then 30, after a few minutes in the 30 mph zone Mr 40mph hammers by at what must have been close to 80 mph (in a 30 zone FFS) At one point I thought I would dearly love to know what went on in Mr 40 mph`s brain, but on reflection I thought that it would probably be best not to!

Oh yes... Using cruise control highlights just how bad most people are at maintaining speed.

That's maybe a little unfair. Cruise control highlights a variance of 2mph in the speed of cars not driven using CC. If nobody used CC this probably wouldn't even be noticed. If people are going from 70 to 75 to 65, that would be bad but it's not something I see particularly often.

This is why I've given up using my cruise control, it's pointless at any safe speed.
