GAP or retern to retail insurance

I've heard mention a few times that its cheaper and in some cases better to buy a policy separate to the car. Are there any recommended companies, as if i Google i get quite a few companies offering products.

If anyone has any guidance of what I should be looking out for, but not got a company to recommend I'm also all ears..

I suspect the products differ and I don't want to be caught out by finding out later something isn't covered.
