Hi. Hopefully not the usual 'What car thread'. Just had dinner with parents & my dad says he wants a new car. Big deal I hear you say. Could be as he currently drives a 2001 Y plate Aston Martin Vantage that has only done 59k, that he does not want to p/x.

His buying history in my memory is 1972 BMW 3.0L, 1977 BMW 7, no idea engine size, but it was that awful light metallic green everyone had with green cloth interior, no wonder my sister was unwell in it!' 1981 BMW 635i , 1985 Merc 500 SEC, 1988 BMW 735i, 1992 BMW 850i. He didn't like it as it had 'tight seats' It didn't he has a big acensorede. 1994 Bentley Mulsanne S, 1998 Merc S600L, Then current Aston. His car has always been his pride & joy & there has always been an Estate car, current is a Merc E320 CDI.

I have no idea what to suggest. He wants something, he says, that's 'Sporty' but when I suggested my nemesis, another BMW. This time a 4 door diesel 6, he pointed out its depreciation levels & says there are so many good looking cars but he has no idea what's good bad or indifferent. I'm sure he will lose a lot on whatever he buys so I'm ignoring his argument as frankly he's done a fortune on the cars I've remembered!

Just thought if you fellow PHers had a few minutes it would be fun to see what you would suggest.

Thanks in advance.

This should be sporty enough http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/d... and will have done the major part of its depreciation.

If he wants something 'Sporty' why not a Nissan GTR?

they hold their value quite well in the second hand market (i think)

Brand new or used but new to him?

Eitherway, I recommend a 911 smile

Concur, when I'm 72 that's what my pension money is getting spent on, brand new though cause at that point depreciation holds no fear for me

As he doesn't need practicality (given the estate as well)

F Type is a great suggestion.
911
R8
Wiesmann?

He could go old school and buy a classic like the Bristol 400 or a new style Morgan 3 wheeler.

Done a fortune???
9 cars in 42 years?!

I should think it has been fairly cheap motoring in some nice metal.

Surely if he keeps his cars that long he just needs to get out there and try a few?

Being too close to your Dad's age for comfort, I personally wouldn't recommend the 911 - fine car though it is.
At his age his reactions will be beginning to slow. 'Sporty' is fine but something that could bite him hard in a mis-judged fast corner is a different matter.
Just my personal feeling.

Err, no they don't........

Hardly think father would want a grown up playstation GTR, great cars as they are, considering his vehicle history, Mercs, Astons, Beemers......nono

Why don't you steer him towards Stuttgart, as other posters have said, and get him into say, a 911 GTS, the last of the proper hydraulically steered 911s. Residually bombproof as well, you would also be preserving your inheritance so its a win win......hehethumbup

A modern C2/C4 is very well tamed. The latter even more so.

You don't mention if he is looking brand new because they are a bit pricey..

But.....

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

Would tick the boxes

Or if 2 door is not a problem..Maybe a bit sporty.. But
