Double parking over two spaces, obviously this would only work in pay & display car parks, but if you buy two tickets is that OK? In my mind it seems reasonable to do this?! Perhaps a sign in the window to say "chill warden, I've paid for both spaces smile"

Also what about supermarket car parks etc where parking is free, who and when can rules/law's be forced upon you?

Reason being I picked up my first car park ding on the car, so of course it now needs a non-paint removal dent guy for a cost of £50-£75 mad. Given how particular I am about parking, I know I haven't been even close to tightly parked to anyone in the car ever and like most on here I suspect, I circle a car park for an end space or park miles away! It's quite a 'ding' so I feel it could be deliberate.

Let's put it very simply:

  • If you double park and pay for 2 tickets, 99% of passers by are going to see a double parked car and won't even begin to think about looking to see if you've paid for two tickets.
  • A few percent of that 99% will then be the ones that will key your car.
  • You'll then post a thread in GG about how you've been keyed.

Technically no as it normally states "must park WITHIN the allocated spaces.

Blunt, but good point. Hadn't considered the effect on the low life's. A bright Yellow Clio does attract the wrong attention as it is at times.

I have wondered this a few times as it makes perfect sense as effectively you are simply renting a space so why cant you rent 2. That said, as mentioned, there are a lot of nobs out there who will take it as a personal insult that you dared to take up 2 spaces.

I often park over 2 spaces but only in a carpark with loads of spare spaces. If its busy I wont do it as its like a red rag to a bull and a little inconsiderate.

It would be far better if people were not such wkers and took more care and consideration around other peoples property, but that will never happen!!

Whenever I park in a car park I take a photo as I leave.

If there's damage there's a good chance it was them.

Not worth chasing for a ding but I know too many who have come back to side a scrape down their car.

These seem an interesting idea, will require a bit more research.

I don't see these antagonising the mongs who might key a car? Just probably get some "pillock" looks but I can live with that.

I'll research what's available here in the UK to buy first but I could make my own, use some medium density foam, insert magnets in side, covered in leather/vinyl for weather resistance and have the side touching the car in a micro-fibre to avoid any scratching if moved should any 'festively plumps' walk by it.
Would require a clean car but I need some motivation to clean it sometimes, the micro-fibre should be a good material anyway?

This, all day long. It's too risky being seen to be protective or a "special case" - you'll stand out and the risk of petty/jealous vandalism is probably more than the risk of a door ding.

I parked in an unmade car park with no marked bays and I parked slightly wide as there was a couple of inches or so of mud and water to step in.

Came back to my car to find some moron had parked about 6" away from my car and had keyed it down the entire drivers side.

No, is the simple answer. Pay and display car parks can enforce some tedious regulation called a Traffic Movement Order (or similar) and that states cars must be parked wholly within a marked bay. Anything else is considered to be obstructing the car park.

I once got a penalty notice for parking in a non-designated bay. I had bought the relevant ticket, so had paid my dues to use the car park, but it was full so I parked in a corner bit. The exact area wasn't designated as a parking space thus I was reprimanded. I managed to get it overturned but that's a different matter!

So parking across two spaces would contravene that rule, so they would issue a penalty based on the fact that you had caused an obstruction. Buying more than one ticket doesn't give you a right to use more than one space (unless you were parking multiple cars!), you could buy a thousand and they'd still consider it obstruction. Effectively they're separate rules.

Who is "them" in this instance? The owners/operators of the car park? The ticket warden? Jo public?

You may have proof of when the damage was done but how do you know who to chase?

I've wondered and felt the same. However if you turned up to the car park and everyone had done this you'd be moaning that 200 spaces had become 100 and that you had nowhere to park.

Prime example of st parking: One day I'm buying my ticket from the pay and display machine. A lady drives around and I flag her down and say there is a space next to my car over in the corner. A few last spaces that can't be seen and nobody ever notices them as the row looks full. She parks next to me, thanks me and is ever so grateful. Later on I come out to go home, massive scuff along the offside and front of my bumper in a very distinct colour left by this ever so polite lady. fk her.

Anyway the point is that you might get a few attendants let it go. The rest would ticket you for not parking within the designated bay, as previously stated by others.

Sorry I meant to add of the cars parked either side.

If you return to find green paint down the side and there was a green car parked there - then you know who to chase.

Some car parks will allow it. I once asked a car park attendant (the car park always gets full) if I were running late to College one morning if I could park the 'Stang over two spaces, as I always went for end spaces as they allowed me to park up to the line to maximize the space between my car and the vehicle next to it otherwise they were a bit tight for my liking but at £2.50 for a full day (as in 24hrs) I couldn't complain. He said there is no problem with that as long as you pay and display two tickets. I never had to test the theory though.

Rude maybe but as far as the owners are concerned they are getting the money for both bays to they won't give two hoots.

I would imagine that anything other than a pay and display car park would provide troublesome though because there is no way of proving it to a passer by.

Not sure if anyone else does this but I tend to reverse park evenly into a bay and before switching off the engine I turn the wheels to full lock adds an extra bit of width to the car. It does seem to work.
