Looking at google maps for the place I grew up, and came across this picture, what on earth are the white oblong boxes painted on the road with arrows in mean?

Can't recall seeing them in the HC, should double check again I guess. Unless someone can save me the bother and just tell me what they are.

speed bumps, though marking the outline does seem odd.

Same type around here.

Most of them are crap, and if you position the car correctly, you can get over them without noticing much.

The thought did cross my mind, but they looked quite flat, seems daft place for speed bumps adjacent to traffic lights if indeed that is what they are.

The junction by the way is between Northwood Rd, and Green Lane, in Thornton Heath Surrey. I left there in 62 when I joined the Navy.

We do have some that are on each side of quite wide normal roads, so you can pass in between them if there is nothing coming the the other way.

Fake speedbumps. If they didn't have the outline, you'd err think it was just road.

This, not sure what the point is as its pretty obvious that the road surface isn't raised...

A hand-wringing prat at the local authority (either LGO or councillor), who cycles everywhere, will have decided that this will slow down the speeding maniacs.

Strangely enough, that junction is a cross road with lights, but only that road has the markings.

At least 8 know what they are, tks guys.

They don't seem to be raised like speed bumps, and the arrows on the LH and RH boxes point in the direction of traffic flow, whereas the middle one suggests 2-way. Weird.

Smaller speed bumps like that usually mean buses use that road.

They're fakes and in the main they work from what I've seen.

I came across some of them for the first time last weekend near Woking. While it slows down those who don't know the road, as they assume it's a speed hump, anyone who regularly uses the road is going to know they're not raised so it does seem fairly pointless.

They're slightly raised but nicer compared to some other humps in south london. As one poster said above probably designed for the newer double deckers that sit lower than older buses.

Cars like to park between two sets in a road I use, so have to go around the cars then back in the left hand side and over the next hump at a 45 degree angle (traffic island in the middle), has anybody figured if these pyramid shaped humps are good for wheel alignment?

Not all of them are fake. A few miles of a road near where I used to live has these all the way along:

they might look just as fake to you but I can assure you that they are all real! Whilst most medium and large cars can straddle them nicely, the problem comes during the day when everyone is parked at the side of the road, and you have to go right over the top of a pair of therm to get past

They are not speed bumps, they are speed cushions.

I believe buses use that road, but its the same as the road to the left and right at the junction, they dont have those markings, very odd indeed.

I believe they are designed so that emergency cars (in particular ambulances) can straddle the middle one without slowing down.
