Just spotted this on ebay (not mine),
any ideas what it will reach, I don't see these as future classics although I may be wrong, it will end up at 4 starclassics for £11999

I agree with you in that it won't be heading for classic status. The MkII and MkI GTi definitely, but the VR6 was largely unloved, as was that era of Golf.

15inch wheels. 6.5J iirc.

The ride quality on standard shocks/springs and 205/50 tyres is so refreshing compared with most modern cars .

I doubt that they will reach classic status. The only thing going for it is the VR6 engine noise. Pretty bland to look at, benign handling, crap damping, awful low-geared steering and only reasonable performance for what it is. I had one for 3 years and 30k miles as a daily hack. As a comfortable get-to-work A-road car that sounded good with a bit of poke it was fine, but it wasn't any more than that.

Not a patch on my old Mk2 GTI or Corrado VR6 as a driver's car.

Now if it had been a Corrado VR6 with that mileage I would have been bidding £12k right now

Got one straight after selling a mk2 16v and agree they are rubbish compared, but if it is as good as advertised I think it would be a cracking buy for about 5 grand.

Looks lovely but the reserve will be very high.

I would imagine any plastic or rubber mechanical parts will be ready and waiting to fail at that age with so little use.

I may have thought that too but having bought a very low milage volvo 740 which hadn't been used in a good while last year I proceeded to put 7k miles on it since I bought it in november, hasn't missed a beat or shown any signs of wear whatsoever. In fact it's going better than when I got it.

If it were a 3 door then I'm sure people would bid higher, but 5 doors do seem to be more common.

I guess it'll go for whatever someone's willing to pay for it.

hehe at 4 Star Classics! 8 Grand for 5 door 16V Mk2..good luck! 41k miles isn't super low!

Nice. As said above, the poorly specified standard dampers need to be replaced with a set of Konis or Bilsteins and the front wishbone bushes changed. This transforms the car although it will always be a long legged A road machine, not a handy B road weapon.

FWIW I sold a 35k mile '98 HighLine for £4500 some 3 or 4 years ago; there is a market for good mk3s.

Here's a gratuitous piccy; purple exterior and lilac leather - who says Germans don't have a sense of humour?

I think Mk III's get a bad press. They're not that bad and l;ook quite stylish IMHO.
My 16 year old 8v GTI was sound enough (bar the rust and things that failed).
I wouldn't pay a lot for one but, as these rust, their rarity will make those that survive, "classics".

Lol, it's not even a highline or anything special.

I think people get delusions of grandeur with low mileage cars. It's not a MK1 GTI, Scirocco Storm or a Capri, MK1 Escort or something desirable with a limited production run. It's a 5 door MK3 for heaven's sake. The least desirable Golf ever made, after the MK4 2.0 8V 'GTI'.

It's done short journeys for 17 years. The engine will be worse internally than one with 100x that mileage.
