Have spotted quite a few people recently who have a satnav stuck on the windscreen - right in the middle of it.

It looks as though it must block half of their view out the front. Is there a law against obstructing your view? Just wonder if one of these idiots will mow someone down as they couldn't see them behind their tom tom...

No idea, but I saw one on the motorway with an iPad stuck right in front of the driver...

I suspect it would come under "due care and attention". I'm not aware of it being explicitly illegal.

That's what i'm talking about - things stuck right in front of them - not to the side or down low, but directly in the line of site. It's like they're using the satnav to drive and the secondary source for directions is the outside world.

MOT fail isn't it? Or was. So possibly an offence under roadworthiness regs?

I have seen this too, although it wasnt a full size, possibly an ipad mini. But right in front of their face and on daytime brightness at night. You could see the interior glow from a long way back.

How the hell can they drive like that and not hit anything? At that brightness they wouldnt be able to see outside the car.

And this isn't the only time, although most just have a tomtom stuck in front of their face

I think it's an advisory as long as it's movable.

I have followed many people with satnavs in front of them glowing away (havent figured out they have a night setting!!)and have noticed that many use it like a form of night vision using it to follow the road rather than look at the road ahead of them!!. As they also have it zoomed in so far the early warning of jams, incidents etc.. are of no use. You can see why the techno dudes are creating autonomous cars, its for all the stupid folk who dont know how to drive properly.

Same people who drive around with steamed up windows, folders mirrored, etc.

I've got mine in the middle of the windscreen, it's my phone, but it doubles as a sat nav.

Three reasons - I can flick my eyes to it without much effort and it's easier to get it to the charger. I dont like having it on my right hand side, means I have to get a longer charger lead and then cable tie it under the footwell so it doesnt get in the way, and lastly so that no-one can lean in through an open window and half'inch it

Where it's positioned means I lose the area that's about 6 inches in from the nearside front corner, but I figure as long as I can see all corners then it works for me

I hate these things stuck to windscreens. My solution. I can see it at a glance, I have no charger lead, and it can't be easily reached. Holder is easily changed for a handset upgrade.

Middle of the windscreen != in front of your face.

By middle, do you mean literally in the center of the windscreen, or mounted just above the dashboard to the left hand side of you?

It's to alert other road users that they're a bit special, and should take extra care when in their vicinity. Another helpful alert, are front/rear fog lights illuminated when it isn't foggy.

I am assuming the OP means directly in the middle of their field of vision when looking through the windscreen normally.

According to my MoT man its a fail if its in the swept area of the wipers, and he will fail cars that are left for MoT for it, if you are waiting he will ask you to remove it and the holder before he starts the test.

I'm still waiting for navigation systems to be smart enough to tell drivers which lane they should be using on the motorway. Seeing as how it's apparently so confusing biggrin

Full brightness, in the centre of the windscreen, at night. I have never understood this.

I have mine toned down and in the bottom right. I can hear it over music and it only blocks my view of the front wing.

I have mine in the centre of the windscreen, as low as possible above the dashboard. It seems to be the least obstructive place.
