Car suggestions to replace current 2

looking at replacing both of my current cars

living in luxembourg, with wife and 6 month old daughter

currently have a 2002 996 4S and a 2008 Mercedes GLK 320CDI (not sold in UK - equivalent to an X3/Q5

the missus wants to swap to a smaller car, and therefore would need to change the 911 into smthg that would function better as a family car

smaller car will end up being a polo or smthg similar, but cannot get excited about anything for 'myself'

always buy 2nd hand, and luxembourg generally has a good choice of most cars with good options (www.luxuto.lu).

c.€40k is top budget, but happy to spend less if can decide that smthg like a Golf R is a good option.

prefer to avoid RWD, as snow and a wife don't tend to mix ;-)
