diesel particulate filters

I have a van with one of these DPF's, and was told that the enemy for one of these, is not making long journeys,short stop starts, basically not blatting it up the motorways.
If this is the case, how come vans running round town, or taxi's sat in ranks all day with the engine running,ruining them, or is this just heresay..
