Hi

Picked up a Micra auto for my mum the other day and proceeded to check the levels and was surprised to find the ATF level quite far above the max line. I have now read the manual which states that checking should be done with the car idling - not knowing much about how autos work, is the fact I checked it without the engine running likely to contribute to the higher reading? (car is currently in paintshop so I can't check till tomorrow night so any advice would help put my mind to rest...). It's only done 5k and has had 3 main dealer services so I would think the level is unlikely to be too far out.....

thanks

Tim

General procedure is to have the car warm, idling and to put it through all the selector positions (PRNDxx) before testing, but YMMV. If you haven't followed the manual then it doesn't surprise if the level is mad!

Yes it makes a big difference, the level will appear high. Most traditional autos should be checked hot and idling.

Use white paper towel to check the fluid when you wipe the (short) dipstick. The oil fluid should be Ribena coloured with relatively few bits in it - the clearer to Ribena colour the better!
