Crossing the middle line
Discussion
This didn't used to be a thing, now it's stupidly common. Where does driving over the middle line despite oncoming traffic come from and why?
I followed a guy last night (down Merry Street in Motherwell if you know it), it's a road wide enough for at least 3 cars side by side.
Matey boy drives down the road weaving back out from the middle for the pedestrian Islands! He's so far over he's driving between the pedestrian Islands and having to pull back to a more conventional road position then immediately past each island hangs a right to drive through all the detrius washed up in the unused road space.
Normal MO is the slightly less bewildering but more dangerous cutting corners.
Do whatever the hell you want, but do it on your side of the road! Grrr.

Avoiding potholes?
There's a massive pothole I drive past regularly, I have to swerve out near the island just after it. The road is wide enough to not bother people on the other side (cross hatching in middle). Get some odd looks sometimes but better than hitting the pothole..ShaunTheSheep said:

you will find you get a much better view into the next bend from the other side of the road. Don't judge the car in fronts view of things from your own view.as for driving in the center of the road in pedestrianised areas, its not something o do, but its a good idea. Just don't go past junctions doing it. You weren't looking to overtake, were you? Benbay001 said:

https://www.google.com/maps/preview/@55.793785,-3....I find a lot of people do this locally to me and it's not too bad if there is nothing there and it's safe but I regularly meet drivers on my side of the road as I come around a right hand bend. Stupidity!
They like to take the racing line I suppose?
I have also noticed (4 in the space of one short in town journey) drivers cutting roundabouts and effectively going the wrong way round the roundabout.
I guess it saves a bit of time and fuel.
Not very safe though as other road users don't expect them to be where they are.

Can't comment on the driver in the OP's post, but in road driving the further ahead you can see the better.
Adjusting your road position to increase the distance you can see is one of the more basic (But beneficial) advanced driving techniques.
...on the other hand maybe he was just pishhed.

Get some odd looks sometimes but better than hitting the pothole..I can't comment on this individual incident because I wasn't there etc, but sometimes moving over the centre line can improve vision of what's ahead, it can improve people's vision of you, or it can make things safer if there are people waiting to cross the road between parked cars, cars where their doors might open, or they might suddenly pull out etc. It's up to the driver to determine the safest place to put his car in the road depending on circumstances. I often cross the centre line of the road - nothing wrong with it at all if it's safer than staying left.
I do on a hoon, its 'safer', but pull back over to the lane the moment I see another car.
Don't do it under normal driving
More room for error, better visibility ahead, chances for sheep/pheasants/rabbit avoidance is better, usually less bumpy on moorland roads if you straddle the white line.

I do it - I admit it, for the very reason those have already mentioned above.....Potholes!
It's much 'safer' to be a good few feet way from the nearside thus avoiding any craters and ruining tracking, tyres and in the worst case a rim, especially in this wet weather and dark mornings / evenings on the daily commute.
It's a shame because it makes it more risky for Mr Motorbike coming down the outside in traffic...
