Stationary with foot on brake …
Discussion
Sitting at the traffic lights last night and noticed that all 5 cars in front of me were stationary with their brake lights on (not just lights).
When I was taught to drive (admittedly a few years ago), I was told when waiting at the traffic lights: hand brake on, out of gear, then anticipate when the lights will change to green.
I thought the logic was if you are hit from behind your foot could come off the pedal, so its better to have the handbrake on. Just made me think how many are also in gear with their foot on the clutch. Sadly the lights turned to green before I could get out and ask
Did this guidance change?

you were probably behind five automatics and it is easier to do the foot brake only. In a Mercedes the foot brake and release is a bit of a faf. In a manual it seems easier to handbrake and no dazzling.
Good point, but a bit unlikely, I noticed it at every set of lights (different cars).g3org3y said:
Is this the new foglight/DRL thread?
And you can say you were here at the start
It's incredibly annoying and unnecessary especially considering how bright modern lights are.
But you know what annoys me hugely, massively, on a colossal scale?
When the car in front of you is approaching queueing traffic and they come to a stop 1 or two car lengths away from the car in front of them, and then slowly, ever-so-slowly, they creep forward, so I have to do the same otherwise it makes me look a bit silly sitting there. ARGHGHGHGH JUST f

S. No one can be bothered seemingly. In the same way I leave extra distance on hills now because no-one can be arsed to do proper hill starts, they expect to be able to roll back a bit.
Don't go to the US - no-one ever uses the parking brake there - for reasons mentioned about the Merc ones (which are geared for US and not changed for here) - they are a faff.
Have always set the park brake on my autos - but aware I am in the minority.

Yes this is definitely worse than people sitting with their foot on the brake. I usually don't bother following the creep along queue, but then you always know someone from the other lane will dive into the space left in front of youBut you know what annoys me hugely, massively, on a colossal scale?

S. I sit on my brake in my automatic car with a stupid push the pedal and pull a lever handbrake arrangement.
The candles that pass as my rear lights dont dazzle though, and I don't have a hi level light so I imagine I'm not causing anyone blindness!
I did start putting it into P but a few people flashed/beeped when I went through R to get to D and put the reversing lights on. Decided to not s
t anyone else up and leave it in D or N.
