Because of epilepsy I have a drivers licence that has to be renewed every three years. I was a bit slow filling in the forms this time and as a result my licence expires tomorrow and I won't be able to drive until it is renewed.

I wondered whether I should tell my insurance company as while I obviously won't be driving (must remember not to forget and accidentally get in car!) my partner will be. I don't fancy the normal half hour waiting for my call to be answered if I can avoid it!

Is it really worth the worry? Just ask them and at least that way you can forget about it after.

I was in a similar situation when I had to renew mine due to my diabetes and they didn't send me the forms and I forgot to fill it out until too late.

You are still licensed to drive until the doctors say you can't. Once your license is being processed the DVLA can send you a cover letter type thing which you can drive with. I had to check everyday with them and it took about 2 weeks for mine to start processing

Oh I didn't realise I could still drive while they are processing it. I says expiry 27/01/2014 so I assumed I was off the road from tomorrow.

Are you sure about this ?

I ask as a fellow diabetic, and it isn't what I have been led to believe.

OP, I had my licence revoked once, mid term through insurance, I told them, they allowed the car to remain insured so my wife could drive it.

I'd suggest you have nothing to lose by just asking your insurance company.

I'm just going on what exactly happened to me when my license expired

I'd advise caution to that, as in giving it as advice.

I have twice been given permission to drive by dvla, when a licence hasn't been in force, for just the few days it took to arrive, both times I've had an e-mail to confirm this, neither time have I needed it, as I haven't been stopped.

Your licence actually expires on the date shown on it, your qualification to hold such a licence doesn't, but your entitlement to drive does, with how things are now, regarding having your car confiscated, the Police computer system etc, I would personally want something to say they'd extended my entitlement to drive after the expiry date.

Just my opinion/preference of course, you're free to do as you wish.
