Ive found myself doing a fair bit of work in bristol, and live just the other side of the bridge (chepstow).

My problem is i drive a small van (Transit connect) and get charged over £12 a time as its a van!!

Now I've been thinking, if i was to sign up for a TAG for a car, would the system know that I'm actually in a van?

Ie if i were to put a tag in my van, would i get charged as a van or the lower car rate?

Im talking about the pay as you go type.

Anyone done or tried this?

Cheers

Not sure how they work, but I think you order a TAG for a car, commercial or HGV. I'd imagine you'd be heavily fined if you tried to get away with paying car rates for a van.

I believe the tag would be for the particular type of vehicle you specify when you order it. There's a season tag or a trip tag. The season is for unlimited trips and is tied to your registration number, the trip tag is topped up from your bank account and can be used with any vehicle of the type specified.

You might get away with using a trip tag for a van, but if they catch you out they have all your details and might well throw the book at you. I don't know if they have ANPR cameras but if they do your chances of getting away with it for long are slim.

I kind of half remember reading something about a discounted tag for people living very close to the bridge. I might have that wrong though, and I can't see anything about it on the website.

hadn't really thought about anpr, but would have to be fairly complex to have every vehicle type linked to the tag.

the stupid thing is, a minibus with up to 9 seats can go through as a car, which is probably bigger than my van!

I believe there term is if it doesn't have rear seats or a rear window, it comes under the £12 rate. so if i fitted a seat in the back and fitted a rear window, i could go through as a car.

Its a very silly setup. A Fiesta Van gets charged £12 odd quid, yet a 7 Seat Land Rover gets car rates!

I'm sure FB acquaintance got fined for taking a van through the coin bins, which must be for cars only.

When I log in and check my usage on my trip tag it shows the time I went through, but there's no record of my registration so that makes me think there isn't ANPR, or at least they don't run a check on every vehicle.

Doesn't it say what class of vehicle it is on the V5? I would imagine that's what's on the database, but if you have windows and seats you could probably argue the case if it came to it. I guess a friendly smile at the person taking the toll might help, but that's not much use for a tag.
