Hi All,

I have a had a car on SORN for a couple of years now and a tax/sorn reminder has come through the post.

The telephone helpline states that the SORN has been made indefinite?

If I wan to keep it SORN, I guess I have to do NOTHING ?

Will the DVLA send me a letter confirming SORN?

The law relating to SORN changed on December 16th, before that date you needed to renew it. Now you don't.

That make sense and it should have been this way from the beginning!

So I do nothing at all?

This time you are required to renew but, as of 16 December 2013, your SORN declaration will be valid indefinitely (or until you either re-tax or sell the vehicle).

Apparently so. Once you've SORN'd it you need not do anything until you then decide to put it on the road. However SORN doesn't remain when a vehicle changes owners, so the new owner will have to declare it.

Just go online and re-SORN it there if needed.

If you try to renew SORN, you'll get a couple of unhelpful error messages from the web site and it won't process or acknowledge. Do a vehicle enquiry, though, and you'll see that it will show the vehicle is on SORN and have no reference to an expiry date.

It's a welcome change, but IMO could have been dealt with better. I got a renewal notice with some wording about how 'rules might have changed', then the web site could have had a big banner saying "if you're trying to renew SORN, there's no need any more as we've made all existing SORNs indefinite". Instead it has (or had, in late December) a couple of small notes that were open to interpretation, and gave worrying errors ("that vehicle is not recognised") when attempting to renew.

But I'd do the vehicle enquiry, just to be sure.
