Buy road tax for NEXT month online?

One of my cars is SORN. I have to use it at 8am on Saturday 1st Feb. I have been trying for the last week to buy road tax online for it (so it can be delivered on time) but the DVLA site will only let me buy tax starting from 01/01/14. I work 8-6 and there is no post office anywhere near my work! Is there a way of buying tax starting from 01/02/14 online, or am I going to have to buy tax (online) on the day and drive 50 miles with only an email receipt as proof of purchase . . . ?

Yes tax on line on the first day of Feb and you will be fine .
The car is currently on SORN so no 14 day period of grace (OP may not be fine at all), unlike if the car was already taxed and the current tax disc expired on 31/1/14 and the OP applied on or before 31/1/14 for the new tax disc... 
I'd suggest the OP asks a friend/family member/whoever to visit the local PO on or before Saturday on his behalf, and ask for the new tax disc to run from Saturday

It may be worth trying again, I taxed my SORNed car online from 1st February this morning. (you were given a choice of from Jan 1st or Feb 1st) What you cant do is tax the car from the reference on the old tax renewal notice, you have to use the reference number on the V5c

Calling custard on this... That would mean someone in the dvla saw sense!HTH
Tis about time though, last year it would only do that after midnight on the 1st of the month.

Nope - I've done it several times over the years. I frequently had my bike off the road over the winter, but wasn't sure if the rules had changed. Tis about time though, last year it would only do that after midnight on the 1st of the month.

From the DVLA:"I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?
When you apply for a tax disc online or by using DVLA's phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 14 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired tax disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives."

I know it's early, but that's not how I read the current regulations..These say that the 14 day exemption from displaying does apply as long as the application for tax is made before 1) the current disc expires or 2) the SORN declaration ceases to be in effect. And, as far as the regulations are concerned, SORN is cancelled the minute the vehicle is used or kept on a public road.

Sounds unlucky 
I drove around for over six months last year with an out of date tax disk on one of my cars before I released and didn't have an issue (the car was taxed btw).civicduty said:

Sounds a bit harsh. I don't display mine, most I've had is a slip from a parking warden saying they have notified the DVLA Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
