What's everyones fastest feeling slow car?

Although on paper dog slow, my first car (1.2 Nova) used to feel pretty sprightly and felt like you where covering ground like a missile (even my mum thought it felt fast at the time). Had a similar experience with a 70ps mk1 ford Ka, feeling genuinely decent on anything but a motorway. Of course, in reality both where dog-slow.

As someone used to barges any hot-hatch feels swift until I look at the speedo.

Must be something to do with size?

My little 1.25 1998 Fez always felt quick, but then I'd come from a 520i E39 so most small things would.

My mums Corsa 1.3CDTi felt pretty fast when I was 18.

Odd thread.

The answer has to be everyones favourite first car. A Mini 1000. KOF 991P. I had one as a first car. I put a scoop on the front, took out the air filter and turned the inlet pipe away from the manifold. So now sounded fast too; it never really was though. The engine then broke with indeterminate (to me) problems and the cheapest fix was to bang in another A Series. So it ended up with an 1100. If anything it was even slower after.

It was fast around corners though. How fast I have no idea and after 23 years I wonder what I would think now.

I was coming from the viewpoint that i'd regularly driven considerably faster machinery, yet sometimes things feel surprisingly swift.

Incidentally, my sister had a corsa (and so does my girlfriend) and they have never felt fast!

Mk1 Ka rental cars seem to fly along, an old mate and I got stuck with one for a short business trip. Moaned about it, resigned to it, started it, showed it zero mercy from stone-cold, revved it till it stopped pulling 1st, 2nd, 3rd "this is actually pretty good fun" slid around some bends - floored it again until it screamed "Bloody hell, what are we doing???" shouted my Mate "forty, forty one".

Got to be a Mk1 MX-5 for me. On a B-road it was ace, but never fast.

Original Mini as well - not the Cooper version but a "normal" one. By modern standards extremely slow, but never felt it.

I had a 1.2 Nova as my first car. Fastest thing on the road http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/11.gif

my newer 1.25 Fiesta felt fast too, until I drove an almighty 1.8 mk1 focus

When I was 17/18, anything felt quick, even the 1.3 CDTI Corsa I learnt to drive in. Very narrow power band, but a decent feeling shove within it. My 1.6 Focus felt like a beast which needed to be tamed when I first drove it, just before I sold it, having moved to a car with almost double the power, it felt pretty glacial. Lots of noise, not much movement biggrin

Cooking 106/Saxos always felt brisk. Weigh next to nothing though.

I quite like the Aygo/C1/107 family. Not quick by any manner of means & seriously run out of puff above about 50mph but you can have good fun with them on a twisty road.

Best one I can think of was a 1999-2000 Corsa 1.0 3 cylinder. That "felt" quick in the lower rev range. May be the way the 3 pot made its power.

Anything over 40 and it was gutless though!

This sound very familiar. Only, after my second engine died in a haze of oil smoke, I built a 1380cc do drop in it.
Now that felt faast, especially until i replaced the drums on the front with Cooper S discs

I tell you, nothing feels as fast as trying to get 100mph out of a £300 20 year old Mini!

No, it's to do with youth and lack of experience. I felt the same about a 1.6L Maestro.

Another vote for a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta; my 99 example in a stunning shade of purple (with delightful contratsing mushroom interior), we christened the Ribena Rocket. And that was coming out of an RS1800 Fiesta (ok it was slower; but didnt feel that much slower).

My brother had a 1.2 Nova it felt SLOW SLOW SLOW all the time. Gutless engine and just a rather crappy car with a crappier interior. Did not feel fast ever.

Not entirely, I still get the occasional surprise now. I'm sure It can be to do with years of slow-feeling swift cars too.

Its not about feeling like you're trying to tame a wild stallion, more feeling like you're making progress and looking at the speedo and thinking 'fwuck me am I only doing 45?!'

Ford Puma. The rev-happy engine and car dynamics make it brilliant to drive and yet stay under the speed limit. Again like everything else suggested though, very much exposed on the motorway.
