Got a 1.6 Passat (company car and a hand mne down so I had no choice but to have it) and its gutless so now driving it between 2 and 3k revs which sort of defeats the object of all the stop/start, 6th gear, Bluemotion etc so thinking if getting a plug and play chip. Has anyone tried one and are they worth the £200-£300 price tag. Initial search and this is looking good value with a 5 year warranty.

I've got no idea whether these work or not, but wouldn't it be classed as a sackable offence to mess with a company car like that?

I've not read my entire company handbook, but I don't think there's a section on "not fking about with company cars" and these things are designed to be removed without trace.

They do work, they're not an good as a proper rolling road re-map, but they're a lot cheaper too.

I'd put it on and remove it if the car blew up. Chance of company finding out zero.

Had one on my Volvo D5 ( dont ask !) and it worked a treat. There is no magic involved , the majority of them just increase the fuel pressure along the inlet side. More torque low down and a bit more urge to the rev limiter. I never bothered to see if fuel consumption was effected. Mine was a tunit box and it could be installed in under 10 seconds. I was happy with the gains and sold it second hand for reasonable money too.

Be careful when removing it though, someone I know fitted one to his new audi, engine started smoking badly so it was sent back to Audi under warranty however in their rush to remove the box before the truck arrived for the car they ended up bending the pins inside the connector which the dealers found straight away resulting in them throwing the claim out.

I've recently been testing these ones out on a variety of different cars and all have responded well and not caused any problems whatsoever

Linky no worky

I have had a couple of tuning boxes, one on a focus tddi (took it from 90 to 113 bhp) and one on a mondeo 2.0tdci (took it from 128 to 160 ish) no appreciable loss of economy and loads more power/torque, made both cars much better to drive.

Link works for me OK.
If they are that good why don't the manufacturers use similar settings in the ECU's to improve power and efficiency - seems a no brainer?

Agreed, but the car is telling me to change up at about 1,500 revs. At least get some oomph above 2,000 revs but very little below.

CR Tech / Bluespark diesel tuning box has now been taken off my Alfa GT.

In principle the desired results were achieved, More urgent acceleration and only down less than 7% in terms of economy over a full tank, however...

Tuning box started triggering all sorts of engine codes and even triggering limp mode.

Final nail in the coffin was the car would not start so whipped off the tuning box and now 2k later no engine issues or warning lights

Multiple reasons - to allow for poor quality fuel in some countries, to maintain drivetrain reliability targets through vehicle life, to allow for multiple tunes of the same engine in various models (i.e. 120, 140 and 170hp diesel models without physical changes).

Mine had the facility to be adjusted which in effect was turning a potentiometer which I assume just upped the fuel pressure accordingly. I was instructed that to get the max out of it, keep turning it up until the car threw an error and then wind it back a notch.
