Currently pootling around in a 1.2 corsa B (the one with 44 bhp... back when it was new in 1997!) which probably has around half of those horses left to this day. As you can guess, progress is glacial and sometimes highly embarrassing especially when you remember it is covered in 'National Trust' and a lot of butterfly stickers from the previous well intentioned owner and you've just pulled out onto a 30 MPH road with 200 meters to build your speed up and still manage to make the oncoming car have to slow down. frown

My criteria for the next shed is:

Must not be awfully slow - obviously this is a second car so it doesn't have to be fast either but it needs to be adequately powerful to be relaxing to drive and not make me want to park up and walk the rest of my journey.

Fairly comfortable - not expecting an S class but a decent level of waftability would be good.

Must be fairly cheap to maintain / DIYable, and not too much of a pain to keep on the road as my main car is pretty maintenance intensive.

Bonus points for a car that is involving and engaging to drive - if I did go this route then the clio 172 would be top of the list at the cost of sacrificing comfort, but I'm sure there are other similar cars which may be more refined than a paper aeroplane.

The budget for all this... £1000 or there abouts. I'm not too fussy whether its diesel / petrol, a hatchback or saloon or estate etc. As long as it meets the above criteria (which I think may be a tall order in itself) i'll be happy.

So far I've thought about MG ZTs, old Peugeots 406s, and a couple of old Volvo models but I was unsure which model specifically as I have no experience with them.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated smile

Maybe look at a Volvo V40 T4 or S40 if you dont want the estate? 200HP, half decent interior and go pretty well. Not in the same league as a 172 but less likely to be totally shagged smile

My mistake - my last 3 cars have all been some variation of 3 series so as much as I love them, its probably the one single car I need a slight break from, sorry!

9-3 and mondeos are good shouts that I hadn't thought about - i'll have a search up for them now along with the Volvos.

Civic is pretty easy to look after - in the time you wait for the oil to drain, you can have the air filter and plugs swapped for fresh items too.

The 9-3's a cracking car for the money. The 1.9 TD is OK, the 2.0 petrol is excellent and not as thirsty as you'd think.

Surely this is perfect territory for a 1.8 petrol mondeo?

Get anything upto a 2005 with sub 1k miles for less than £1000

Its a lot newer that most other choices, is typically bulletproof reliable were as parts are cheap and easily DIY'able

Any idea what the reliability of these engines is like once they are aging? I have seen a 1.9 TID 150 model and a 2.0 turbo petrol with 150 bhp too. Its amazing on the face of it what you can get for just over £1000. Great looking cars IMO.
