Hi !

After [url=http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=23&t=1370809&i=999999&nmt=Polo/Fabia%201.6TDI%20(etc)%20-%20Second%20Car%20Recommendations?]this[/i] recent discussion I think I'm basically sold on the Fabia being the better choice over the Polo (despite currently owning an old Polo).

Searching, I came across a Mini Cooper D with a 1.6 diesel engine of similar spec, perhaps a little more refined, which I like the sound of. They're around £6.5-£7.5K at the moment IIRC.

I have no experience with Mini's at all, no friends have owned one either (apart from the OLD ones). Does anyone here have experience, passing comments/comparison?

The Mini only seems to be available in 3 door with that engine, which isn't a big deal really. I guess I'm wondering how the Mini would compare in terms of servicing/parts? I am in the UK.

From what I've read, they seem reliable, well put together.

Any feedback welcome smile

The MINI Cooper D of that price band will have the PSA 1.6l Turbo Diesel engine fitted, the same as found in the 207/307/C4 etc etc.

It's a belt driven engine so will at some time in its life require a belt change, check when this needs doing and how much it will be.

Other than that, servicing at a BMW dealer reflects BMW dealer prices, but there are plenty of independents around. Most MINIs will have had the 5yr/50k mile TLC servicing pack, covering servicing costs for this period, and it can be extended with TLC XL.
