A colleague of mine is selling his car for many thousands of pounds and has had a number of people on the phone about it.

Anyway a guy turns up, looks around it, gives it the once over and agrees to buy it.

Claims he needs a few days to sort out insurance.

Four days later, and no word. He gives him a call this morning.

"Sorry, i cannot afford the car and only have £500 in cash and not sure when i will get the rest"

Meanwhile about 5-10 people called and he had to turn them away.

Moral of the story

TAKE A DEPOSIT

At least if he backed out you would still be £100 up for further valeting, adverts etc

Now he is spending his day off re-advertising it and trying to find the numbers of people he turned away.

Without a deposit, it seems odd that he wouldnt at least keep a record of the 5-10 other interested people and say he'd be in touch if the sale fell through for any reason. Oh well, he will do next time!

Unless it's a friend, or trade customer I always always always take a deposit and the buyer is told that anyone else turns up and wants to buy it it will be sold to them unless a deposit is left.

Not always correct. smile

Advertised my LHD Vette on here.
Had a fair bit of interest from a number of parties.

Guy from Sweden says he is flying over with his mate on Tuesday morning, has paid to have the car independently inspected on Monday by a Vette specialist (Actually I suggested this to him - as I can't insure him to drive it ).
We agree a price - based on the condition I say the car is in - and subject to the inspection.
He has paid for 2 flights to Gatwick, has hired a car and paid for a hotel - just to see a car ( pretty much sight unseen ).

I have 2 British guys want to guzzump him. One wants to bring a trailer down next day - and take the car away for a little more money
They don't want to respect that they are welcome to see the car, but I can't do a deal - as the Swedish guy is pretty much £800 committed - just to see the car.
They can view the car, and if the Swedish guy doesn't follow through - then they are in the game.

What do you do?

I honoured the original agreement with the Swedish bloke. He financially committed ( not to me though ) - about an £800 spend to view a car just based on my word and an unknown independent.

He was delighted with the condition of the car (inside and out - I was totally honest with every single defect I could find ).

Bank transfer was done within 10 minutes.

He drove away happy - ( Actually, I was a bit tearful about it )

But - yes in principle. If someone makes a serious financial commitment - they will buy it.
