For now I've wired the memory and the power together so that the stereo turns on. Otherwise it wont. Only way to turn it off is eject it when i leave the car. Anyone got any ideas?

It randomly turned off when i was driving one day and i couldnt fix it.

Switch the red and yellow wires.

Assuming it's not something modern with CAN bus that is.

Buy a multimeter so you can tell which wire does what?

The red was reading 12 vaults.

I'm going to put a tenner on the fact this is because you have a permanent live which is part of the CANBUS system. You can get canbus adaptors but they aren't cheap.

That means it's connected to the battery then, possibly via some other connections.

What were the others doing, and did any of them change when you turned the key on or off?

I'd be very surprised if an 04 Polo has a switched live at the stereo. The factory head unit will have a permanent live and turn on with a canbus signal.

On my 02 Audi A2 I ran a separate wire from a true switched live in the fusebox. The only problem with that is it's an ignition switched live so doesn't come on in the acc position on the key. I added a hidden toggle switch to swop between permanent live and switched live to enable operation of the stereo without the key.

I don't want to sound rude, but what exactly are you saying?

Might be worth opening them all then and seeing if you have enough to weigh in!
