Hi guys. Need to get something more practical/reliable than the defender 90 for me to run about in and for when we want to drive more than 20 miles (landy can overheat)

Got around 1500 to spend give or take and can't be massively expensive on insurance.

I'd like something with a bit of comfort maybe, i'm nearly 30 now. Not too fussed if it's petrol or diesel as I wouldn't at the moment be doing loads of milage.

Any suggestions welcome

So far I've considered stuff like volvo 850s, saabs, a puma 1.7, bmw 520, vauxhall signum even.

Kind of just lost in too many choices now

Saab 9-5
Volvo S60/S80
Merceddes E320 Cdi (watch out for rust - but decent ones are out there)
E39 Petrols

For £1500 I feel you're limited to what's available in your local area.
Buy on condition and service record. Be open-mind about make-model.

I think you're possibly looking in the right direction with the Volvo comment - an amazing 850 or probably even a V70 can be had for that money - a 'T5' or 'R' model.

Loads of comfort, luxury, practicality and reliability combined with decent performance (steer clear of the 4WD models though).

Mine was bloody great, and I ran it from 80,000 miles to 180,000 miles and all I ever fitted was new suspension, brakes and tyres. Peerless reliability. No squeaks or rattles at high miles either!

£1500 is good money to buy a car (lots of choice) but thats also its downfall, theres so much metal for your money in this catergory.

i'd focus less on 'what car' and focus on whats good for the price. got my mum an 05 mondeo 1.8lx for £1300 fsh 137k miles not what i was looking for but it was the best thing about.

E36 328?

If you want the practical option, certainly worth considering the Touring.

I'm a fan of these - but be aware that the check engine light is on on this one! Could be nothing (significant), but you'd want to know up front.
