Hello chaps,

Looking for some advice, currently have my car up on eBay, set it up as an auction with no buy it now. Current highest bidder insists on paying by Paypal if he wins. He claims to be from Ireland and can only pay via Paypal (immediately after auction ends). He says he will have a courier collect the car 5-6 days after auction ends. I use Paypal for purchases and have never had any issues but I don't want to get burnt. Can you guys spot a potential scam here?

Cheers for all advice in advance!

I'm guessing he'll raise a dispute with PayPal; either not as described or not received and get his money back.

Why can he not provide cash/bank transfer on collection?

Definitely potential for a scam - if his PayPal is linked to his credit card he can do a chargeback and get the money back whilst still having the car.

You're the only loser if the deal goes sour on eBay - so I'd follow your thoughts and skip this scammer.

For the benefit of PHers, what car are you selling? After all, sending someone to pick up a 1997 Renault Clio seems a bit strange, whereas a 2013 Aventador may warrant sending a minion smile

Paypal gives far too much protection to the buyer. This is a private sale, so there should be no come back if something subsequently happens to go wrong with the car, assuming the car is as described. Accepting Paypal will erode this protection - they will likely refund it if the buyer simply claims he doesn't like the colour of it.

You can choose how you want to be paid. Did you specify Paypal as an option in the ad?

If he doesn't have enough fund then the payment will bounce. He'd already have collected the car and sailed opff into the horizon whilst Paypal recover their losses directly from you. Almost happened to me once, which is the reason I will never accept Paypal for a car under any circumstances

He'll get your car then do a charge back and/or paypal claim. You'll lose your car & the money.

Bank transfer is the only way id consider it personally.

Scam. You will have no car and no protection from eBay. I'd only accept cash or a transfer cleared into my account before I'd release the car.

DO NOT let him pay for it by paypal!!!!!! tell him to shove it up his st box! My dad got caught with a scam similar to this. A courier came, all looked legit, then the seller raised a dispute with paypal which then my dad has to prove he was in the right. £2k out of pocket, no log book, an address to an industrial estate for the buyer, and a p1ssed off wife for me old man to deal with!

If he wants it that badly tell him you'll give him a 50 quid discount for him to get a flight over and pay cash.

Fookin' scamming barstools, do my chuff in' head in, whatever happened to earning an honest crust!!!

He'll overpay by £500 and ask you to pay the courier for him by bank transfer once you 'have' his money (because he's on a ship or some such bks and can't organise a bank transfer).

Then once you've paid the £500 the original amount will get clawed back somehow. You never see anyone, no one comes for the car, you've just been had for £500.

I think I`m right in saying that you can now withdraw Paypal money into your bank account within 2 hours. It used to be days but last time I did it , it stated please allow 2 hours.

If this is the case and the money has gone out of Paypal i.e. cleared into your account you could cancel all forms of payment and cancel cards linked to paypal to prevent chargeback. I have no idea if this is possible and just hypothesizing but if the account linked to paypal is empty and the card linked is cancelled or withdrawn I dont know where paypal magic the money from ?

He can use a bank transfer, even from an Irish bank account.

Thank you all for the replies! I was already hesitant as it was, everyone on here has confirmed my suspicions. Cash on collection only then.

For all those asking, it's only a lowly poverty spec 2004 Audi A6 1.9tdi. Seemed ridiculous he'd want it collected from London and taken all the way to Ireland.

Excellent advice this has all the hallmarks of a scam.
