Speedy, Reliable for £8k
Discussion
I am in a position to change cars and fancy something with some serious oomph....It needs to be reasonably reliable though and have room for 2 kids when needed....I am currently thinking of the following:
BMW 545 or 550 MSport
MB CLS500
Audi S4
Quite liking the Audi at the moment - anything I should look out for?

There seems to be a V8 theme in your shortlist...
Sticking with that, how about a Vauxhall Monaro? Plenty of space in the back for a pair of 6 footers (access is a bit tight though). The LS1 small block is very reliable, parts and servicing are cheap, and it's got plenty of character. Doesn't feel all that fast, but can go quite well if you work it, and sounds great
Plenty of tuning potential too should you wish to go down that route at a later date.

I bought a 54-plate 4.2 V8 S4 Avant with 54k miles for £8k and have done 18k trouble-free miles in the past 10 months.
I had an S60 R for five years before that and it was the most fragile, unreliable car I've ever owned. It spent 33 of the 64 months I owned it off the road. Volvo had it for my last 10 weeks of ownership, couldn't fix it and gave it back to me in a worse state than when they got it. I wouldn't recommend one.

Nothing German at that price is likely to be speedy or reliable. You will likely be getting someone's broken, overrated cast offs.
As far as the reliability aspect of this post is concerned, never a truer word. Stick to Jap stuff, or prepare to get financially reamed, in my experience.LeighW said:
