Clear, safe overtake resulted in angry van driver
Discussion
Overtook a van this morning on the way to work. Was on a stretch of road that has a gentle curve, so you have good visibility.
Van was crawling along about 35-40 mph (in a 60 mph limit), so I overtook. Nothing was coming the other way and I gave the van loads of room before pulling back to the left.
I got to a T-junction about half a mile down the road, stopped and the van caught up. As I sat waiting for a truck in-front to move, the van pulled alongside me (on a verge). As I was turning right, I thought he was trying to squeeze past to turn left. So I moved closer to the truck to give him more room. The van only moved a bit further.
I looked left and noticed that the driver was quite angry with me. He was mouthing something (which probably wasn't nice) and furiously shaking his head. He also had a cigarette in his hand that he was waving around. After doing this for a short time, he sped off.
I know we have threads on here that include similar incidents and sometimes people performing the overtake may cause an issue (such as cutting someone up). However, the overtake I performed was completely safe and I don't understand why the plonker got so wound up.
I guess some people do indeed view overtaking now as 'pushing in'. Bizarre!

When you actually passed him could you have been a little close to the side of his van or perhaps he was dozing hence his inappropriate speed and if you passed at 60 he would have kacked his pants and thought you were driving at light speed?
Perhaps he thought there was ice on the road and was driving slow because of that?

Or he was taking the piss out of you because you overtook, knowing that you would need to stop a little way up the road.Van was crawling along about 35-40 mph (in a 60 mph limit), so I overtook. Nothing was coming the other way and I gave the van loads of room before pulling back to the left.

Was this near Mitcham as it sounds like the same chump who had a go at me when I had the ex and my son in the car. Lucky for him that I did have them on board or he would have been s
tting a cigarette butt.
(Probably lucky for me instead as being Sarf London, he would have had a knife or a gun)
He was driving like a complete c*** and then decided to get threatening and rude when I safely overtook whilst he had got himself stuck in a bus lane.
Unfortunately the roads are mainly populated with morons. Ignore them and it makes them even angrier and hopefully leads to their first, and indeed may be their last, heart attack.

Don't let it bother you - just forget about it.
Possibly just some muppet who hates been overtaken
Oh yes. I just cannot understand why people are like that.Possibly just some muppet who hates been overtaken
Incidentally, my fiancee was driving us somewhere at the weekend. She drives slower than me (40 - 50 mph in 60's, for example) and this seems to bring out the other type of plonker. The one that sits on your chuff tailgating, but simply will not overtake. It's as if they are trying to push you out the way rather than go around you.
I'd rather have someone overtake and crack on than someone tailgating me.
