My 5 series is in for some work at the moment and i was given this as a loaner.

When they told me on the phone all they had available was an x1 i was initially gutted, but when they dropped it of for some reason i quite liked im not sure if its this model pretty sure its an m sport or the colour suits its shape better or what but it looks nicer than all the other ones ive seen on the road. Its a x drive 25d with 218hp and its been a hoot to drive handles incredibly well for what is a mini suv crossover thingy. The engine is a real peach for a diesel and the whole thing feels solid and well put together. Its not exactly a pistonheads car but ive been pleasantly surprised by it. i am actualy hoping they need to keep my car in a little while longer what is wrong with me will i get banned now? boxedin

I think they look decent in m sport trim, my only gripe is they are a bit pointless in the sense that a 3 series touring is more practical and its not exactly going to be a good off roader so no real reason to get one over a 3 series touring really unless you like the funky looks. They are very expensive as well if BMW did them a a decent price i could see the point more. I would probably take an x1 m sport over the new 1 series though. but my money would go elsewhere anyway.

Are the wheel arches as square as they look or is that just camera perspective?

They don't look right.

It's a decent car, but has a horrible front and rear. It sells in massive numbers in Switzerland and Germany.

How? It's the same size as a 3 series Touring? It has the same size boot, passenger capacity etc...?

Let's be honest, I think your only gripe is that it's a 4x4/crossover smile

My wife looked at getting one last year, they have that similar awkward ugly look the current 1 series has, Which makes them very marmite, I think they are decent car's better suited to younger people, M sport is a must, the base models are truly hideous inside and out, m sport isn't exactly nice but we looked at some base model ones and they were horrible inside, the m sport is decent though.

I drove a 2.0l diesel version a while ago. Thought it was pretty hateful really. Driving position just felt a little weird? Like they couldn't decide if they wanted it to feel like a big car or an SUV so just sort of half-way housed it.

It has the same size boot? never new that always thought the 3 series touring had a bigger boot. Ill take that back then and if that's the case it dose make a bit more sense and would be something to consider over a 3 series touring.

My Wife had an X1, it replaced an 3 series touring (E46), the 3 series had much more room inside. I couldn't drive the X1 with the baby seat in the back, never had that problem in the 3 series. I'm a lofty 5'8'' which shows just how cramped it is.

The X1 was however fine to drive when I could have the seat in a decent position. She's replaced it now with a mini convertible which has about the same room inside for 4 passengers.

It was a bad buy for us really, but I don't think it's a bad car as long as you don't have kids/passengers/legs.

Yup - it's based on the E91 chassis. We looked at it having gone from an E46 to an X3 and it was pretty much exactly the same as the (then) 3 series Touring. However for us it just didn't work as we'd got used to the extra capacity of the X3 boot. I tried an xdrive23d at the time and found it to be a very capable car for what we needed, just not what we wanted (if that makes sense smile ). I find the comments about comparing it to be smaller than an E46 strange, especially with the Mini comment, we've got one of those too and I find the Mini is tiny!
