"Jaguar has announced it is to build its XJ saloon car in India, but the company's chief executive has told the BBC he is "absolutely committed" to manufacturing cars in Britain.

Ralf Speth said the key to Jaguar's success was its "Britishness".

The XJ will become the third model from the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) group to be built in India, following on from the Jaguar XF and the LandRover Freelander."

Are Jaguar XF models sold in the uk built in India?

No, they're built at Castle Brom.

And they're not really built in India either, it's a CKD process.

I thought all the models sold in the UK were UK-built at the various plants, with the Indian-built ones going to the region (i.e. China etc)

I only have one thing built in India. It's one of those 'Cinni' fans, the black ones in a wire cage. It's a bit hit and miss, in that it requires a fair bit of jiggling to get the highest two speeds working, but it hasn't rusted to pieces yet. I think it's a smart move - I mean, I can only see Indian manufacturing being better than the UK, where we have over 100 years of engineering heritage, right?

Having spent some time in Mumbai with my work, I can honestly say that I can't foresee any problems with this whatsoever.

Completely Knocked Down kit. They ship all the sub components to India and the Indians bolt it together.

I take it the assumption people are making is that this will replace UK manufacturing rather than be in addition to it. Any evidence for that assumption?

If it works for JLR to have manufacturing in the UK and in India then great.

I remember when VW sold some SA built Golf MK4 in the UK. Not good.

Some BMWs from South African factories made it into the UK grey market many years ago too.

I may be way out of date but I thought many RH drive BMWs and VWs are still built (assembled) in SA

The Indian CKD operations will be for the Indian market only, in a similar manner to the existing setup with the XF and Freelander. It's to avoid payment of an import duty in the Indian market.

The majority of UK-spec 5dr VW Polo's are built in SA

...and the majority of RHD c class and 3 series too.

Still, the cars to avoid are the ones built by Americans in america

They are also going to start building a lot of cars in Brazil.
Also KSA as they have a ready supply of bauxite and the required power generation to smelt aluminium.

China will soon be producing (LR) vehicles, too.

It gets to a point where it makes sense to broaden your production base. Shipping all of those cars around the world when there is such demand doesn't do much for your bottom line.

I am in India right now and was amazed to see a massive billboard ad for the XF right outside Mumbai domestic airport. Given its surroundings it came as quite a culture shock. Haven't seen any Jags yet, but have also only seen one BMW and one Merc - I'm out in the sticks though. Japanese manufacturers who build their cars in India currently have the market sewn up round here at the moment it seems. Suzukis are everywhere and Honda are advertising middle class lifestyles heavily on the telly. If Jag could grab a couple of percent it would surely make the owners a few bob.

All RHD C-class Mercs are manufactured in South Africa.

India's import tax is ridiculous, and I think Mercedes have been doing CKD kits for a while now. However, I remember some guy's S-class 10 years ago, and it only had a fraction of the standard features you'd find in a UK-spec car (it even had a much watered down on-board computer if I remember correctly!). I don't know if that's still the case now though.
