We all like a moan about the state of the roads we have to drive along, damaging our cars or making us swerve about like drunkards to avoid the holes. The question is, who actually does something about it?

Do you report potholes and sunken manholes etc? If so, whats your preferred method of doing it?

Yes - I do it online via out local authority website. One particularly bad one I reported was repaired the following day.

If I reported all the sunken filled-in trenches, manhole covers etc, I wouldn't have any time to do anything else so I have to stick to the big holes.

I've recently started using the FillThatHole app sponsored bt CTC.

Seems like using such things is a way to force the councils' hands somewhat. If they are aware of the defects, not fixing them shows negligence and they can no longer use the defence of inspecting the road according to their schedule as the notification should take precedence.

I've been using http://www.fixmystreet.com
Seem to get a reasonable response from the council on that.

I have started to become a local busy body and report potholes via http://www.fillthathole.org.uk/

It is quiet satisfying when the hole/sunken chamber etc is fixed within a couple of weeks of reporting.

I reported a section of frost damaged road about 50 yards long via the council website. It was resurfaced three weeks later. Coincidence? I've no idea.

I do, although it's a waste of time in Essex. I've been told by Essex Highways that potholes on minor roads won't be looked at until they've fixed the defects on the major routes or they're extremely dangerous.

Damage to minor roads doesn't even get painted purple now to indicate they know about it but aren't going to fix it any time soon.
