57 Astra Mk5 1.9cdti 150, called dealer enquiring if I should change it and to my surprise he said don't worry about it, it's covered to 100k miles/10 years, currently it's on 77k and 6 years old, he also said as it's under extended Vauxhall warranty so will be covered, car has full manufacturer service history.

Not sure what to do now, change belt and water pump or take his advise, 100k or 10 years seems a lot to me!

My old fiesta was (IIRC) 120k or 10 years. IO ran it to 82k and never went near any of the belts, or the coolant, or the PAS. Was fine. It got 6k oil changes and full 12k services though

Know what you mean. I'm old skool about this stuff, my Connect is meant to be ok 'til 150k miles..............it'll have had 3 sets of belts and tensioners on by then! Just can't bring myself to do it any other way. I worked for Ford when they recommended changing the belt at 36k miles on the CVHs, we used to get them in with as little as 12k on them with the belt snapped. It's a powerful memory!

I thought the Rover KV6 was 90K miles.

Sometimes it's the tensioners that fail. I think very occasionally new tensioners can fail. Sometimes, 'if it aint broke' may be better.

The CVH was a safe engine wasn't it ? I'm sure I remember having one fail on a company car , and in those days you just changed the belt.

The same was true with Vauxhall Cavalier I had.

I don't think CVH was 'safe', I may be wrong.

The Pinto was safe in 1.6, but not 2.0?

True the CVH is a non-interference engine so a failed cambelt shouldn't ruin the engine, besides those CVH were more than capable of dropping valves and smashing them into the pistons instead;)

The first thing I would want to know if I was considering NOT changing it was whether the valves hit anything if it snaps, ie wwould it require a substantial rebuild. Or, does it just require the belt renewed after it breaks?

Many manufacturers say 'sealed for life', no maintenance required etc., often to reduce the on-paper running costs for fleets etc.. If it was mine, I'd want it changed just for peace of mind, irrespective of what the dealer says. Knowing someone who had a belt break and the hassle it caused I wouldn't think twice about it. Just my opinion.

They say it is but nothing in writing, when it comes to paying out they may change their tune.

£309 for Cambelt/Tensioner & waterpump from Main dealer, it's less than I thought hence why I'm thinking about getting it done. Car runs perfect and I'm hoping to keep it a few years, warranty runs out in November 2014 anyway and I certainly won't be running it to 100k without warranty, so its now or 9 months time.

I was shocked to find the puma's cam belt interval is 80k or 5yrs! although I have been used to much older cars...

In that situation, I'd change it to be honest.

Nice to see someone else does the waterpump and tensioner too !

Yep, I got away with a belt failure, albeit at idle, on a 1.6 Pinto Sierra.

First start-up was a bit of a squeaky bum moment, admittedly. But it fired up and ran like nothing had happened.

I thought they were interference. I was wrong.

I only knew the one I had wasn't, they came in different sizes, I couldn't speak for all of them.

The 1.8 I once borrowed definitely was!

My fiat bravo of the same age with the same engine is meant to have 90k intervals on the belt.

The water pump is the week point rather than the belt and mine failed at 81k luckily not causing any damage.

That's one of the worst engines in existence for throwing cam belts (normally through the water pump packing in)

I'd not risk it, it depends how much faith you've got in their warranty and some blokes word.

Get it changed before 100K I had the pleasure of rebuilding a head of a Vectra 1.9 150 after the timing belt went at 92,000 but the car was well out of warranty. It mashed all the valves and damaged quite a few of the guides, this was all because of the water pump, so make sure they change that when they do the timing belt, also make sure they put a Gates timing belt kit (tensioner's ) don't bother with a genuine kit as it will be more money and will just be a Gates kit in a Vauxhall box.

Some of the newer A4 and A6s will do 140k between belts, no time is mentioned

We advise them at 75k or 5yrs
