£2000, fun to drive hatch, 40ish mpg, what should I buy?

As per the title really guys, I'm selling my rx8 and buying an mx5 for the summer.

Question is i'll need a daily runaround aswell and I don't fancy it being mega boring haha.

So the criteria is 40ish to the gallon and around £2000 obviously the cheaper the better, it must be a semi decent steer and I may need to put a mountain bike in the boot.

Cars I've thought about so far are the ignis sport and a yaris t sport. A pal has an iggy and it was good fun the couple times I've borrowed it.

Anyways, I want to hear what everyone else would buy so 3,2,1, GO!!

40 mpg? I don't think so.

Peugeot 406 Coupe 2.2 HDi. I was wondering about these the other day, how good they might be. There’s some promising owner reviews on Parkers. Don’t know about fitting an MTB in, a lot cheaper than £2k.

2k might get you a gen7 Celica VVTI, not a hatch or fast but probably fun to drive and seats 4.

Some interesting suggestions, from past experience 40mpg from a type r is very unlikely and out of budget.

I'm not a fan of diesels so really it'll be smaller petrols that I reckon would fit the bill, and the bike in the back is a must have ability.

Would love a mk2 golf or a 205 gti, finding a decent one is pretty hard now mind.

Id suggest a Clio 172.

£2000 will bag a nice one and I imagine by folding the seats you could squeeze a bike in.
Not a bad steer by all accounts too

ETA, thinking about it, I can fit a bike in Seicento.. I'd be amazed if you can't in the Renault!

I had a leon cupra r, It was the most disappointing car I've owned, It was quick but the engine was completely void of character with a poor throttle response (remap would've sorted this) and the handling was awful, it managed to be harsh over bumps but lacked any stiffness or finesse when pushing on, point and squirt type car. And it got about 32mpg on a run

How likely is 40mpg in a 172/182?
