Please can someone tell me which of the following have split tailgates (ie the top/bottom can be opened separately?)
I've tried looking at photos online, which doesn't help. Short of driving around and trying to open the boots of stranger's cars, I'm appealing to you lot! Thanks!

BMW X5 (07 on)
Mercedes ML (07 on)
Volvo XC90
Disco 3/4
VW Touareg

Me too, but can't open the bottom without opening the top first; is that a genuine split tailgate?

My defender has a rear door that is a multipart door

But that is most due to rust

Why don't they incorporate steps (not the band) into the back of these "cars" so that peoples dawgs can get in easier?

VW Touareg
No.
But the rear window can be opened on its own (on the old model, not the new), which is a jolly useful feature when reversed tight up against an obstacle and the boot can't be opened.

I see why opening the back window would be useful. I had it on an MGZT-T and it was a great feature.

Never had a split tailgate. I see how the bottom bit works as a place to sit, but isn't it an embuggerance making it harder to reach inside the car for stuff?

Just to clarify split tailgate, mine you can open the glass only or the whole liftgate. It isn't split top & bottom half.

In the Disco's case. They were on the S1/2 models, they were ugly, they failed and dropped down with age and due to owners not greasing them up. Plus they hang low so reduce off road angles.
The same would be true today, if offered on current models.

The D3/4 has a split tailgate, it's handy for sitting on, you can shelter under the upper part if your out with the dogs etc.
