Just been alerted to a private reg buying site and it seems the reg plate that my old man has on his car is for sale for over £4k anyone come across this before?

Background is my dad bought an old car last year (not long off road) he put an MOT on it and took the plate off to put on his car (through the dvla etc).

Calling them on Monday but wondered if I should be prepared for problems?

Cheers

Ave

Numberplate dealers seem to advertise plates they don't "own" quite often, email or call them & ask them to remove it.

My guess would be that they advertise numbers they don't own at inflated prices, look for offers and then call the owner hoping to make them an 'offer they can't refuse'.

A lot of plate selling places seem to only advertise plates. It's rare they actually own them.
As mentioned, give them a bell and tell them to do one.

Wouldn't worry then, just give the dealer a call and ask for it to be removed.! A few years ago I had a similar thing happen to me and I just called the dealer and had it removed from their website.!

Me too, (I emailed them)
From what I've read dealers list numbers to generate interest, they list "AA1 punter contacts them & they reply we haven't got that, but we can offer "AA12***"

Yes I've seen the same and thought that would be the case when I was told my dads number was found but it actually has the buy button. I have dropped them an email asking to be removed telling them to check the DVLA site with my dads car details.

Thanks guys was slightly panicked I would have a problem.

Contact them and say you want to buy it. They will contact your dad to say they have a buyer for his plate. He should reply saying it has special meaning for him, and he wants £250K for it. They will contact you apologising and saying it's not for sale. You reply saying that's a shame, as you really wanted it, and would have paid up to £300K.

They will contact you dad and pay his asking price. Then they will contact you and you say you've changed your mind. Split the £250K 50/50.

Ps. May not actually run that smoothly in reality.

They keep the details on for years so a previous owner might have contacted them for a price.

Eg One of my plates was for sale on an a site I didn't know about until a mate asked me why I was selling it - phoned them up and they reminded me I had contacted them in 2001 and it had been on their books since then ( and never had a single call in over 10 years!)

A mate of mine has just bought a vehicle with the original plate , he contacted reg transfers and was offered £800 only on completion of the sale , no payment up front.

This offer has now been increased since to £1000 ,but only subject to payment after they have sold the plate.

Similar plates are offered for sale for up to £5k

Just gives a little insight into the margins they are using.
