Your most disappointing automotive purchase

I have two: a Peugeot 206, 1.4. What a dull engine, rode nicely but within 100 miles I knew it was wrong.

Second was a big scooter, it was great on paper and technically, but hideously uncomfortable. Sold within 400 miles at a huge loss!!

Mgtf. It was crap in every possible way. Owned it for the summer then got shot ASAP by taking a big hit on the resale.

An electric aerial, just could not get it to fit because of the angle of the bodywork.

Bought a Seat Arosa 1.0 in a bid to find the cheapest car to get me to work.

Turned out it was so slow you had to rag it to keep up with traffic, so it only managed low to mid 30's MPG. I always thought the Lupo / Arosa looked like a cheeky little fun car, but it was utterly dull to drive.

Replaced it with a 1.6 Focus that was much quicker but got similar fuel economy.

UK spec X plate Impreza Turbo.....not the cars fault really, they were completely over-hyped at the time, and it just didn't live up to it. Bob Rawle was employed to liven it up a bit, which he duly did at the earliest opportunity, but if he hadn't made as much difference to it as he did, I was already planning on getting rid!

A 2004, BMW 318Ci Sport. Despite a full BMW history it was the most unreliable car I've ever owned - there was always something wrong with it.

In the end, I got so pissed off I just traded it one Sunday much to the surprise of my Wife!

R56 Cooper S. Hugely unrealiable, and wasn't a patch on my R50 Cooper to drive. It did look and sound fantastic, however.

If I'm honest ( which I rarely am) then it has to be my Merc Sl500. I loved the engine, it had loads of go and sounded 'epic'(AMG exhaust) but it was quite unreliable and cost a bomb in servicing and maintenance, and I worried about it constantly. The power roof in particular used to freak me out, I was always waiting for it to go wrong. Also, the brakes were crap and heavy and it didn't handle all that well. Fuel consumption was also bad enough for me to actually notice!

My 996.2 Carrera. Couldn't live with the Tiptronic gearbox, it was heavy, lethargic and drank petrol. It was also relatively slow and completely unreliable which made for an uninspiring relationship with me.

An E320 cdi. Had not had the opportunity to have a proper test drive and as soon as I got to a motorway I had that sinking feeling.... There was always something odd with that car and in hindsight I wonder about the mileage.

Followed by a close second by our X5. It's taken 6 months for me to decide that it's staying and that's partly only because I don't know what else I would buy.

My MX5 was a decent little car but it wasn't the lifechanger people made it out to be. The MR2 Turbo that replaced it was far more fun!

Made the same change myself and completely agree, the mx5 is so overhyped.

Everything about it is 'OK', but not great. I sold my Clio 182 for mine - in hindsight not one of my best decisions...
