I rarely do pay at pump but noticed that today,
I thought it was because I used a debit card with not much cash left in the account confused

The only time I have ever seen a limit other than £99 is when using a Maestro card, which was limited to £70 at any station visited, which was a sod when driving a Volvo 850 T5R with a 15 gallon tank :P

I filled at a Shell on a Bristol yesterday. I normally can't pay at pump as I have a fuel card but yesterday I was in the weekend car, so my cash.

£60 limit as well.

Whenever I have breached the £99/£100 limit a polite word with the nice man behind the counter has sorted it. Why would they turn trade away?

I don't quite get what you mean maybe I'm missing the point but surely by going in and having a chat you might as well pay in the shop anyway? I had a £60 limit the other day too, pump stopped at just over £59.

Yup, £60 at my local too. Ridiculous as all it means is I have to stop, put the fuel hose back and go through the procedure again, this time to get another £10-30 worth of fuel (depending on how empty my tank was to start with).

Pointless, annoying, and I can't see how it saves or protects them from anything?

I hit a £60 limit at an Esso garage recently... the first time I'd paid at the pump in a while as I'd previously written them off as useless precisely because of these limits - when even £99 is too little if you're filling a large tank from empty.

It does make you wonder what quantity of fuel the average customer purchases...

That is hillarious!

Perhaps forward this to your bank, to further the amusement, and see what they say..?

At a guess, probably half a tank or maybe three quarters of a tank? Not many people run the car down to the low fuel light and then fill up to the brim.

I would imagine the limit is just about enough for most people. What's the fuel tank size on a typical medium size car these days - 55-60 litres? £60 at current prices (£1.279/l) is 47 litres, so that's three quarters of a tank on an average family car.

Can appreciate that the £60 limit is a problem for barges or big 4x4s, but they're a relative minority in most of the UK (although perhaps not in Tonker's corner of Surrey).

The Shell pay@pumps rarely seem to be working round here.

Maybe it's a cunning ploy to get you into the shop to buy some overpriced sandwiches and orange juice?

We have a brand new Shell station nearby and pay at pump machines weren't even fitted - as they want to get you into the shop.

this happened to me regularly when running a chevy suburban with the long range fuel tank. Pump would reach the £99 limit then shut off....simply replace the handset and reset to zero and remove and start filling again... then pay both bills....always worked for me..??

£60 would only get me between 1/3rd and 1/2 a tank in my Jag!
